It’s all Smiles for Women in League Round

The Illawarra Coal Rugby League has today launched the 2016 Smile Team Orthodontics Women in League Round to be played on 30 July at a time when women represent the fastest growing area of involvement in the sport.

Local figures unveiled at the launch at Smile Team’s Fairy Meadow Practice show:

  • 440 female players registered in the Illawarra in 2016, up 271%
  • 147 volunteer female coaches, trainers and club officials registered, up 73%

Illawarra Division Rugby League Manager Chris Bannerman, was joined by Smile Team Orthodontics Director Dr Joe Geenty at the launch.

They joined a team of women representing the many important roles females play in Rugby League, including:

  • Former Helensburgh Tigerlilly and current Jillaroo Sam Bremner;
  • Secretary of the Woonona Bulli Bushrangers Sarah Crimston; and
  • Representatives from Woonona-Bulli JRLFC Leaguetag teams.

In announcing the inaugural Smile Team Orthodontics Women in League Round, Bannerman said it was vital that the game continued to recognise the important role women play in the game.

“Women are at the heart of our game. From the role of women playing rugby league, to volunteers, partners, referees and coaches, the women who work in the game and the mothers who make the decisions to allow their sons and daughters to play or to go to matches. The game simply would not survive without them,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Geenty encouraged local league fans to get down to their local junior or senior club to show their appreciation for women involved in shaping local rugby league during the Smile Team Orthodontics Women in League round.

“We all know how important it is to have an active lifestyle for our health and well-being but first and foremost playing rugby league is an opportunity to have fun with your team mates.

“So get involved and show your support for the women involved in rugby league – whether that’s your mum, sister or friends,” he said.

The Smile Team and I98 Street Fleet will also be out and about at various venues with a chance to win tickets to this year’s NRL Grand Final, in the Smile Team Orthodontics Guessing Competition.
