League Women Round 16 – Ansett v Eagles

Ansett won the ‘cliff-hanger’ of the week as they snuck past the Eagles 69-68 thanks to three free throws from Erin Boyd in the last 57 seconds of the game. The game was in doubt throughout with no clear winner until Boyd (15.3ppg) dropped in the winning baskets. It was only the fourth win of the season for the Blues, but it was a good way to end the season as they didn’t make the playoffs. The Eagles on the other hand are into the semi-finals despite losing their last two games and will have to re-boot the team if they are to advance past the first round. Boyd finished with a team high 17 with Tamiyah Perkins adding 16, Ruta Valiulyte 14 and Sophia Hatzismatis 12. Michelle Friel (13.5ppg) from the Eagles led all scorers with 24 and Trish Graham had 15.

Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

Another record fell to the Tracy Village Jets as they slipped past the Lightning 60-51. The win was their 33rd straight and broke the old record of 32 they set in last year’s Championship Season. The Jets never made one of their trademark ‘break’s during the game as the Lightning managed to keep them from blowing the game wide open with their transition game. Lightning trailed 33-26 at the half time break and were only down by 10 at three quarter time, but they just couldn’t overcome that buffer. The League’s leading scorer Tikesa Docherty-Cole (20.8ppg) hit a game high 19 followed by Sam Rioli & Erin Geer on 12 apiece. For the Lightning Hayley Hendricksen (19.8ppg) had 13 and Dominique Carbone 12. These two frontrunners match up again next Friday in the Major Semi-final. The Lightning would appear to be the only team capable of the upset…watch this space.

Palmerston Power v Razzle

Brittany Ward led the Palmerston Power to a comfortable 63-45 win as they fine tune for the upcoming playoffs. A slow start in the first quarter put the Power up 12-11, but they jelled in the second quarter to run off 22 points to just 11 as they built up a 34-22 lead at the major break. The Razzle kept the game pretty even in the second half, but failed to mount any major challenge against the Power. Ward (15.8ppg) finished with a game high 16, Jeska Matthews 15, Haven Hohipa-Wilson 13 and Jaylene Boundry 12. Genelle Bridge (11.5ppg) topped the scoring for the Razzle with 14, Rebecca Murray hit 12 and Kaylena Marimowa 10.

Ladder:       Tracy Village Jets 18-0, Lightning 12-5, Palmerston Power 9-9, Eagles 6-12, Razzle 5-12, & Ansett 4-14

Next week Semi-finals:   Friday: Palmerston Power v Eagles 6:00pm & Tracy Village Jets v Lightning 7:15pm

Men

League Men Round 21 - Palmerston Power v Ansett

Ansett blew the Palmerston Power away with a 112-78 win that gives the minor premiers a distinct mental advantage as they head into the playoffs next week. The Blues have looked like the team to beat during the season and this win confirmed it. Three players hit 20 points or more to lead the Blues to victory. Max Davies (7.8ppg) had 25, Brad Davis 22 and Jerron Jamerson 20 plus Freddy Webb added 15 and Mitch O’Donoghue 12 and these five have supplied the fire power throughout the competition. The Blues landed 15 treys during the match…that’s 45pts worth! Jesse Bell (21.5ppg) hit a team high 23 for the Power with Tom Godwin & Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson on 15 each. Ansett will be looking to add a Grand Final win to top off the season. They have won the GF only twice 17 years…1999 & 2012.

Razzle v Eagles

The Eagles rolled over the Razzle 97-66 to clinch the double chance in the upcoming playoffs. The Birds will match up with minor premier Ansett next Friday night for a chance to get to the GF. Alex Fertig (35ppg) led the Birds once again with a game high 33. The Birds were only up 20-18 after a quarter of play but boosted that out to a 50-30 halftime lead. It proved too much to overcome as the Eagles kept up the pace to outscore the Razzle 43-36 in the second half. Fertig had help from Jesse Williams-Hook who hit 20, Dirk Steenbergen 16, Jordan Sing 14 and Shane Harrison 10. Reed Ridder (30.4ppg) led the Razzle with 25 with Brendan Dell on 12 and Joshua Smith 11.

Lightning v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels put a question mark over the Lightning’s chances in the playoffs with an 83-73 win. The Rebels failed to make the playoffs but made sure everybody knew that they believed they should be there. Jerrell Sanders (28ppg) let the Rebels with a game high 30 followed by Chad Bewley on 14 and Marcus Ch’ng, Lance Schmidt & Jake Kirby on 13 apiece. Lightning’s only challenge came in the last quarter when they trailed by 14, but despite outscoring the Rebels 26-22 they still fell way short of victory. The absence of big man Craig Martin did not help their cause and they will need him in the finals if they are to challenge for a GF spot. This is the first time in seven years the Rebels have missed out on a playoff spot. Cameron Bailey (10.5ppg) led the Lightning with 26 followed by Austin Kisselev (29ppg) with 23.

Ladder:       Ansett 16-2, Eagles 14-4, Lightning 10-8, Palmerston Power 10-8, Uni Rebels 10-8, Tracy Village Jets 3-15 & & Razzle 0-18

Next week Semi-finals:          Friday: Ansett v Eagles 6:00pm & Lightning v Palmerston Power 7:15pm
