2nd Quarter Report as of April to June 2003
Introduction
The Solomon Island Basketball Federation through its National Basketball Development officer Mr. Golden Kiloko is slowly establishing and achieving some of its goals as part of the federation development program. The major set back of the development of sports in our country including basketball is having access to proper and good quality facilities.

Despite of the unavailability of good facilities, we are still continuing with our development program in trying to establish out door basketball court in and around Honiara and the Provinces and also the promoting and developing the game of basketball in our country.

SCHOOL PROGRAM
The Schools basketball development program is continued from last quarter with conducting of Coaching, Referees and Benches to prepare them to run and help out in the high school and primary school basketball league. There were about more then 80 students who were participate in the basic coaching and referees program.

The High school basketball league had kicked off its competition on the 19th May 2003. There 10 high schools that were competed in the competition. The HBL committee, which they looked after the comp, had divided the competition into two zones namely East side and West side high school basketball competition. It is very interesting to see school kids playing basketball; they have a very high interest in playing basketball.

The Primary school basketball league will kick off its session on the 28th July. It was suppose to start on March, but due to unavailability of basketball facilities which hindered primary school basketball league, the committee had decided to put forward until 28th July, that will after the SPG. Hopefully by that time some of the basketball out door facilities including the Multi-purpose hall will be free. There are 12 primary who had already submitted their names to compete in the primary basketball league. The primary school basketball league executive committee is comprises mostly teachers from individual schools who will take part in the competition. The competition is proudly sponsored by one of the leading whole Sale in Solomon Islands, the QQQ Whole sale.

HBL

The Honiara Basketball League competition had finally kicked off its main session on the 4th April 2003, after negotiation was made between the owner of the electronic score board Mr. Lawrence Quan and the HBL committee. Both parties had signed an agreement regarding the used of the electronic score board. The HBL committee is still pursuing in getting a sponsor to fund an electric score board for them, so that they will not repeat the same problem that they had experienced.

The HBL committee with the help of the NBDO is working on a program in organizing competition for the veterans, Churches, communities, housewives, mixed competition and unemployed youths.

SPG
The Solomon Island Basketball Federation is continuing with the preparation of its Men's and Women's basketball squad to compete in the upcoming South Pacific Games to be held in Suva, Fiji 2003. The Federation is very much confident in their teams in producing good results in the SPG.

We had organized a best of three (3) test matches against the Honiara select side as part of their preparation towards the competition. The first test march was played on the 25th May; it was well organized and competitive. The second trial match will be on tomorrow Wednesday 18th May 2003. The SIBF is working on several fundraising to purchase their competition Uniforms in Australia.

JON TOUR

The Oceania Basketball Confederation had send its Zone development officer Mr. Jon Hoyle to SI as part of the OBC development program to the Island countries including Solomon Island, under the Solidarity program from the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Island.

Jon had visited Solomon Island several times in the past, helping out in the basketball development program in our country. During his recent visit, he conducted several coaching and referees programs for schoolteachers and school kids in and around Honiara. There were more than eighty students and 20 teachers who took part in all the programs; we also had the chance of conducting a basic coaching course to more than 20 year 1 diploma students at the Solomon Island College of High Education. I will still continue with the development program at SICHE next semester and onward.

We had visited several schools in town who have access to basketball court and other B/courts in town. He suggested that there is a need to upgrade all the existing basketball facilities and also construct new basketball court.

The tour was very successful and a very comprehensive program was organized for Jon tour.

PROVINCIAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
There are some provinces that had requested our office to visit them and help out in their basketball development program and also constructing of their basketball court. Hopefully by next quarter I will be traveling to some of the provinces to assess the possibilities of conducting programs and also to assist in getting funds from Aid donors, Government and Provincial government to construct out door facilities.

At the moment I'm still pursue on the basketball projects which I submitted to the Australian High Commissioner for the renovation of outdoor B/courts in and around Honiara and the provincial out door basketball project which I submitted to the Micro-Project under the EEU funding scheme.

ONOC PROGAM
The President of the Oceania National Olympic Committee Mr. Kervin Gosper and Mr. Joe Kalo ONOC executive member had toured Solomon Island on a good will visit last month. It's a first of its kind to have such high-ranking personals in the ONOC office to visit our country. We (all federations) had the chance of meeting with them and discussed certain issues, which was affecting the development of sports in our country.

We also very fortunate to have Mr. Will Glenwright from the Australian Sport Commission last two weeks. He was purposely here to follow up on the ASP 2006 program and also to do an assessment regarding the development of sports in country.
