3rd Quarter report as of July to September 2003
INTRODUCTION
Basketball has been improved early this year on its development program, which we had achieved some of our programs through the help of many volunteers, company sponsorship, fans, families and many individuals.

There was down fall to the development of basketball this quarter, especially when basketball was left out and not represented during the 12th South Pacific games in Fiji on the 28th June to 12th July 2003. As a result its affect the domestic competition, the disarray of the federation committee and all other development program, which was plan for this year and years to come.

Despite of all that, the NBDO is still working tirelessly in trying to revive the sport by continued with some of the programs laid ahead by the Solomon Island Basketball Federation. I personally find it very tough at this stage, because of the problem mentioned above.

SPG
I went to the South Pacific Games in Fiji on June/July as part of the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands Administration team and also help out as a referee in the SPG basketball tournament. It was a good learning experienced for me, especially in the administration part of job. The Solomon Island Contingent leaved Honiara to Suva on the 28th June and return on the 13th July 2003.

NEW CASTLE
As part of the Oceania Basketball Confederation program I was invited to attend and help out in the Australian National U/20 years basketball tournament in New Castle on the 12th to 19th July 2003. I took a bus from Suva to Nadi on Friday and board the flight to Sydney on the same day, from Sydney I catch a trained to New Castle which took me about more then three (3) hours to get there. On Friday night we had our referees technical meeting and the tournament kick off on the next day. It was a good learning experienced for me, especially having some expertise from the National Basketball League Referees technical personals coaching us. The tournament was last for a week, while in New Castle I was able to visit few other local associations in New Castles and also observing SDOs program. The trip was worth as I learned a lot from it and hope that ever I learned would help me to further develops my program here in Solomon Island.

HBL

The Honiara Basketball League domestic competition is currently under suspension for almost two weeks now due to withdrawals of most of the clubs/teams registered under the HBL league, this also includes the high school competition. The HBL committee is working on solution on how best they can solve the problem that they had encountered at the moment.

QQQ PRIMARY SCHOOL
The QQQ Primary schools basketball league will be winding up its basketball competition next month October. Eight (8) schools had been entered to compete in this year's basketball competition. The biggest obstacle to the running of the QQQ primary school league is venue, but the committee had managed to over come it. The Solomon Island Basketball Federation is working on some propose basketball project with aid donors to fund out door basketball courts in and around Honiara and in the Provinces as part of its development program.

NEW SIBF COMMITTEE
The Solomon Island Basketball Federation had elected its new committee on the 6th September 2003. The old committee had been disarray for almost a year after its took office on the 1st of March 2001. The President had manned the office since then until the recent SPG in Fiji on June/July, which was verbally resign from being a president. NOCSI and OBC had been informed of the president resignation.
I was authorized by the Oceania Basketball Confederation and National Olympic Committee to call for a fresh election in order to form a new SIBF committee. A meeting was convened on the 28th August, which was well attended. The President had submitted his resignation letter during that meeting and a new committee was elected.

Members were; 1. Dr. Cyril Pitakaka - President
2. Freda Matangi - Vice/President
3. Jerry Pakivai - Secretary
4. Randy Hatigeva - Treasurer
5. Members - John Mane
- Fa`amoana
- Lapule Haro
- Paul Quan (Ex-officio)

The Committee had its first meeting on the 3rd September and agreed to send a U/20 years Boys and Girls team to take part in the Oceania U/20 years in Coffs Habour June 2004. They also agreed on staging a tournament for high schools in and around Honiara on the 15th to 19th September during the schools one (1) holiday in order to select its squad members.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR FA`AMOANA
The National Olympic Committee had again very helpful as part of its ongoing support to the development of basketball by offering another scholarship to Mr. Fa`amoana to attend various basketball courses in Australia. Fa`amoana had been very outstanding and committed in helping and coaching the disable kids in and around Honiara for a while. The SIBF had endorsed him to the National Olympic Committee and he was award a scholarship this years. Fa`amoana had left Honiara to Australia on the 4th September and he will return on the 13th October 2004. Similar scholarship had been offered to Golden Kiloko last year.
The Solomon Island Basketball Federation would like thanks the National Olympic Committee for their ongoing support to the development of basketball in our country and also would like to thanks the Australian Sport Commission and the Oceania Basketball Confederation for their genuine support and very instrumental in getting Fa`amoana across to Australia.

The Website will be very helpful and will further develop and promote the Solomon Island Basketball Federation to the out side world. NBDO WORKSHOP
I was not able to attend the NBDO workshop at Coffs habour as of 12th to 24th September 2003, because of the accommodation problem, which I had encountered at home. The workshop was purposely to help NBDOs to further their knowledge in developing basketball.
