2006 BASKETBALL ACTIVITIES REPORT

It was another successful year of basketball development on its development infrastructure, administration and successful organizing of different comp. and we would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Solomon Island Federations to sincerely all stake holders, business houses, communities, schools, referees, bench officials and the many volunteers who had help out one way or another in developing basketball in another successful year of basketball. A special thank goes to the FIBA Oceania and the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands for its financial and technical support towards basketball in our country.

2006 Basketball Activities

1. Solomon Games Basketball Competition

The 3rd Solomon Games Basketball Competition was held in Makira Ulawa Province in June/July 2006. The SG Basketball Competition is the highest basketball competition in the calendar of basketball in the country.

2. Super 4 Basketball Challenged

The Trans-world Commodities Ltd had dunked funds for the Super 4 basketball competition organized by the Honiara Basketball League this year. The Trans-world had confirmed its long term commitment in sponsoring the HBL competition. It is anticipated that more teams will be participated in 2007 Trans-world basketball challenge.

3. Under 20 Yrs Basketball Competition

The Under 20 Yrs basketball competition is part of the SIBF development plan for young basketballers. It was a first of its kind to organized such competition in age category. The competition had registered 4 boys and 3 girls teams, it is anticipated that more teams will be participated next year from schools in and around. SIBF will also organize under 14/15 yrs basketball competition as part of its development plan.

4. Inter-Tertiary Basketball Competition

Inter-Tertiary is a yearly competition between our local students from various

institutes from the region from. In this years competition 6 teams had entered in

the Men`s and 4 teams entered in the women`s competition. This years

competition was organized by the USP Honiara based students. The next

competition will be held in November/December 2007.

5. 2007 Samoa Pacific Games Basketball Training Squad

It is one of the Solomon Island Basketball Federations priorities is to select its

men`s and women`s training squad for the Pacific Games in Samoa. Fourty (40)

men`s and women`s had been selected for the basketball training squad, and

their training program will commence on the 16th of January 2006.

6. Bellona Tour

It was part of the Solomon Island Basketball Federation to develop basketball in

the provinces. The tour to Bellona was a overwhelming success, and we would

like to sincely thanks the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Island for the

making the trip possible. About 40 participants had took part in the recent

basketball in the Bellona Island. Similar program will also organize for other

provinces in 2007.

7. Website

We`ve been utilising our website as it is one of the very powerful tools in promoting our basketball program to our basketball family with in the region and to the outside world.

8. AYAD to the Solomons

Solomon Island Basketball Federations had been benefited from the AYAD program this year. The AYAD and FIBA Oceania office had sent Mr. Ryan Burns early this year to assist in the development of basketball in our country, Ryan had been doing a fine job in developing the youth basketball in Solomon Islands. The SIBF would like to sincerely thanks the Australian Youth Ambassador and FIBA Oceania for the great assistance.

9. Honiara Basketball Festive competition

Basketball was featured as one of the four (4) core sports apart from Soccer, Netball and Volleyball during the Honiara Sports Festival under the Australian Sport Commission sport project in the country. Basketball was one of the sports that had attracted a lot of people to come out and support their community team(s) playing in the preliminary round and the final stages of the competition. A lot of basketball promotion during the competition which had contributed to the success of the tournament.

The Honiara Community preliminary basketball challenged had a big impact to the development of sports. Fifteen (15) communities in and around Honiara had took part in the competition in the men's and women's division. It is a first of its kind under the Australian funded sport program, the competition had provided opportunities for people who never seen playing basketball in any organized leagues or competition in the past, it was a range of participant from sectors of the communities in and around Honiara who had come out in full force and represent their communities in different teams, which most of them have never seen playing basketball before. It is a good sign for the development of basketball not only here in the capital but in and around the country. The competition was divided into three (3) zones 1. Eastern Zone, 2. Central zone, 3. Western Zone. The top two (2) teams from each zone will than advance to the second stage which is the final of the competition on the 18th August 2006. A total of 6 men's and 5 women's teams from East, Central and West zones had advanced to the final stages of the competition of the Honiara Community Challenge.

The Solomon Island Basketball Federation would like to sincerely thank the Honiara Local Organizing Committee for financially support the program, and also the Honiara Community Basketball committee for a job well done in organizing the competition, and also to all the referees who are tiredly officiating all games to a very successful ending.
