PROVINCIAL BASKETBALL INFRASTRUCTURE

Isabel Province is currently constructing its basketball out door court since last month, the project is funded by the Isabel provincial government, and it is hope that the work will be complete by next month (November). I had the privileged of visiting the province under the Australian Sports Commission project last month and actually saw the site, and they had requested for technical assistance once the construction work is done, especially providing the court dimension, conducting basic coaching, referee, bench and sport administration. It is part of the Solomon Island Basketball Federation development plan is to develop basketball in the provinces. Temotu province had just completed its AUSAID funded basketball outdoor court, and as part of the project agreement the NBDO will be traveling to Temotu soon to conduct a basic coaching, referees, bench, sport administration, organizing competition and also electing its provincial basketball association to be part of the Solomon Island Basketball family.

So far Seven (7) provinces had already had their own basketball facilities, and Solomon Island Basketball Federation needs to facilitate the setting up of its provincial basketball association. Provinces are; 1, Honiara. 2, Guadalcanal 3, Makira 4, Renbel 5, Temotu 6, Isabel 7, Malaita.

HONIARA SPORT FESTIVAL BASKETBALL CHALLENGE

Basketball was featured as one of the four (4) core sports apart from Soccer, Netball and Volleyball during the Honiara Sports Festival under the Australian Sport Commission sport project in the country. Basketball was one of the sports that had attracted a lot of people to come out and support their community team(s) playing in the preliminary round and the final stages of the competition. A lot of basketball promotion during the competition which had contributed to the success of the tournament.

The Honiara Community preliminary basketball challenged had a big impact to the development of sports. Fifteen (15) communities in and around Honiara had took part in the competition in the men's and women's division. It is a first of its kind under the Australian funded sport program, the competition had provided opportunities for people who never seen playing basketball in any organized leagues or competition in the past, it was a range of participant from sectors of the communities in and around Honiara who had come out in full force and represent their communities in different teams, which most of them have never seen playing basketball before. It is a good sign for the development of basketball not only here in the capital but in and around the country. The competition was divided into three (3) zones 1. Eastern Zone, 2. Central zone, 3. Western Zone. The top two (2) teams from each zone will than advance to the second stage which is the final of the competition on the 18th August 2006. A total of 6 men's and 5 women's teams from East, Central and West zones had advanced to the final stages of the competition of the Honiara Community Challenge.
