NBDO 4TH QUARTER REPORT 2004

4TH QUARTER REPORT BASKETBALL

INTRODUCTION

Development program this year had not really convinced according to the Solomon Island Basketball Federation development program, as lot of things had contributed to it. Apart from all the hiccups, we had achieved most of what had been in the development planned. With the visits of Jon and Stuart this year, it was really help and boost our program. Hopefully, with a lot exciting program set down for next year we will back on our feet again, especially with the completion of Multi-purpose hall, additional outdoor basketball court at the end wing at the Multi-purpose which funded by the British High Commission, the approval of the provincial basketball project which will be funded by the Australian High Commission, school programs and the Mini South Pacific Games in Palau which Solomon Island will definitely send a Men's and Women's team there.

NOVEMBER HIGH SCHOOL COMPETITION

I had organized a November High School Super Six championship; the National Sport Council proudly sponsored the competition. The Championship was opened to all schools here in Honiara to compete and also allowed students from provincial high schools to play for any schools here in town. A lot of provincial schools students who were on holidays were playing for schools here in town during the school championship. The competition was really interesting and competitive as a lot of new faces especially students from provinces and few from overseas had team up with schools who had compete in the championship. The student referees had also really contributed to well organized of the competition, as they had officiated and in the conducting of the championship. There were massive improvement on players and also on refereeing and benches. We had some one who never played basketball before, also playing in the competition, he is about 17 years old and he is 7'2 feet. He pretty quiet interesting. 6 Boys and 5 Girls team had entered and competed in the championship. The school teams are:

BOYS GIRLS

1. Panatina 1. BECS
2. KGVI 2. KGVI
3. Mbua Valley 3. St. Nicholas
4. St. Nicholas 4. Hornets
5. Hornets 5. Panatina

The National Sport Council had donated us with $1,400.00 SBD to cater for prizes. The prizes were 1st - $300.00, 2nd - $200.00, 3rd - $100.00 and 4th - $100.00 for both boys and girls. In the Boys category, Hornets took the 1st prize, and St. Nicholas runner, BECS on the third and Panatina was on the 4th position. In the Girls category, BECS took the first prize, Hornets runner up, KGVI on the third position and Panatina on the fourth position. The competition was really organized especially with the help of some Teachers who had had accredited with coaching certificate with Jon Hoyle and also with help of many student referees. We are looking forward to bigger competition next year, which will include primary school competition, school camp. During school holidays and also provincial high school championship.

OBC EQUIPMENTS

First I would like on behalf of the Solomon Island Basketball Federation and the Red Cross Hurricane basketball club to sincerely thanking you (OBC) and especially those who had donated all the stuff, it was a great contribution especially to our basketball kids here in Solomon Island, we do really appreciated it. It is not the first time that OBC had donated such a wonderful gift to us. Once again thank you very much for your ongoing support to the development of basketball in the country.

Any way, we had gathered at the Australian High Commission compound with all the Red Cross Hurricane kids and witnessed the handing over of equipments to one of the Solomon Island Basketball Federation representative Mr. Eric Chow at the request of his Excellency to least have some one from the SIBF to received the equipments on our behalf. In his remarks, the High Commissioner was really happy to be part of the development of sport in the country especially with basketball they had helped basketball in the past and looking forward to work closely with the basketball federation in the development of basketball in the country. The federation representatives had thank the AHC for their generous support and helped to the development of basketball in the country and also thanks the Oceania Basketball Confederation for it's on going support and especially for sending over of basketball equipments.
We had shared equal among the Hurricane basketball team for their programs and also for my program this year and next year, especially for prizes and etc.

SUBMISSION TO AHC

The provincial basketball project proposal had been approved according to a source from the Australian High Commission. They had contacted the President of NOCSI and informed him verbally that the project is approved for next year. I'm still yet to receive any official information in black and white, but with the information I received from the President NOCSI will cement the plans for next year. I'm still yet to find out information on the basketball proposal to renovate and build new courts in Honiara. The lady that deals with it is currently on holiday, hopefully by early next month, I should have any information about it.

Any way, the basketball court, which they are currently working at my Island, is estimated to complete by next month. The project was funded by the AUSAID, I applied through them since 1999 and its now nearly complete. With all this new basketball set up in the provinces will allow more people especially in the rural areas to play the game and also we can extend our program reach the unreach.

As I have mentioned on my introduction, there were a lot hiccups along the way to development of basketball this year according to our development plans, but at least the ball is still rolling. With a lot programs and activities set down for next year, I personally believe that basketball will back on its feet again.

I would like to take this opportunity to thanking you especially the Oceania Basketball Confederation President and the Secretary General and staff, SIBF, ONOC, NOCSI, stake holders and every body who had helped one way or the other in the development of the sport we love, and looking forward to work with yous in 2005.
