Training for b'ball officials

BASKETBALL Fiji has this week started training officials to go through bench and stats training as they gear up for the U18 Oceania Tournament in December to be hosted at home.

BF official Apenisa Naitini said the training started on Monday with "the statistics training for two days and the bench official training for one day.

"After a successful tournament in 2014 with the USP U18 FIBA Oceania Championships, this is one of the steps being taken by Basketball Fiji to ensure that all aspects of hosting is of international standards," he said.

Yesterday, 20 volunteers were trained by Catherine Grawich from FIBA Australia to be game bench officials.

"Their roles will be monitoring the games and recording all the technical aspects during each match," Naitini said.

The training by Grawich included scoreboard training, scoresheet recording, and time-outs 24 second shot clock. "These volunteers will undergo a series of both theory and practical sessions throughout the year as we gear up for the U18 Oceania Tournament in December hosted by Fiji."

The workshop is being held at the Basketball Fiji office at the old Laucala Bay Secondary School.
