PROMOTIONAL EFFORT !
Next Saturday we will stage our second World Athletics Day 2007. This will be for athletes born in 1990 and 1991. The following weekend there will be a National Championships Meeting on Friday evening and Saturday. Then we have the international invitation "Tri-Rigger Championship" against Nauru and Marshall Islands teams. In view of all this activity, we decided to hold a KAA Athletics promotion in Bairiki Square at lunch-time today.
ATTRACTIVE PROGRAMME !
The programme included a brief History of KAA, starting with the first SPG in Fiji in 1963. Then there were short introductions to many of the main events, using blocks, baton, take-off board (for Triple Jump and Long Jump), Hurdles, throwing Discus and Javelin, and putting the Shot. We could not show High Jump and we were on a limited concrete surface, but the "lessons" were given with enthusiasm and were received with applause ! Interspersed with these introductions were a series of Athletics questions, addressed to the audience. Those who answered correctly were rewarded with a T-shirt ! And in between all of those we had music from a DJ !! We will see how much all that effort increases participation and audience in the coming weeks !
THANKS !
Thanks are due to the members of the Committee and a number of senior athletes for assisting at this event. Among others present to be mentioned as part of the History were Karakoa Iotia (an athlete and current National Record-holder who competed in the 1980s), Eneree Tataio (our first I-Kiribati competitor in an Oceania competition in 1998), Miss Kaitinano Mwemweata (a current athlete and the first I-Kiribati Olympian in Athens in 2004), and Taom Annaua (a current athlete who competed in Melbourne in 2006).
