Days 2 and 3 at CAIRNS.

Raobu was not totally happy with his best of 12,35m. and three failures today.   However, that was enough to guarantee him a second bronze medal for finishing 3rd. in the Open MShot in the West division.   A little more speed of rotation and better angle would probably have put him over 13m.

The day after he had to withdraw from the 10,000m., Tebwao prepared better today and finished the u20M 5000m. in the good time of 18-32.07.   This would rank him quite high in the KAA Rankings and gives him a good chance of winning the event in the imminent Inter-School (KISSAC) in Tarawa.

The two girls contested the u20W HJ.   Etita performed with more confidence than Teina and cleared first time at the heights from starting at 1.10m. up to 1.20.   Two third-time clearances at 1.25 and 1.30m. finally gave her 5th. place in the West division.   At 1.35m. she failed to trust her technique !   Teina did not get enough lift on take-off and took 6th. place with 1.25m.

Kiatau looked comfortable at the starting height of 1.60m. in the u20M HJ and cleared first time at that and 1.65m.   He then had a second-time clearance at 1.70 followed by a third-time success at 1.75m.   He retained his technique at 1.80, but just lost the timing on his first two tries.   On his third try, he was too far from the bar on take-off.   Nevertheless, he came close to equalling his PB.

The weather today was cloudy and cool with a few sprinkles of rain and sunny intervals., .

Day 3 was another cloudy and humid day, and Kiatau started his u20M LJ hesitantly and without a confident approach.   His first effort was only 5.07m. but this improved, with a little advice, to 5.29, then to 5.60.   The fourth jump was probably his best, and over 6m. but was a very close no jump on the board.   His fifth was his best at 6.07, so he achieved one target.   Another 7 cm. would have given him the bronze medal !   As it was he finished 4th. out of 8 in the West division.   One lesson is to measure then trust your run-up !   The next to run aggressively and attack the board.   His landings were generally OK.

So, to summarise their achievements, two bronzes, four 4th. places, two 5th., one 6th. and one 8th.   A few cms. more and more concentration to avoid failures on jumps might have brought more rewards.

As indicated above, and in the story on Day 1., there are lessons to be learned and experience to be used in future.   So there can be benefits which are not tangible !
