Hansen and Colley Compete At 49er European Championship!

Gosford Sailing Club 49er sailor Kurt Hansen and crew Jim Colley have shown great form over the past couple of weeks, training hard and competing in the Olympic Men’s 49er class European Championships in Kiel, Germany. The talented sailors kick-started their campaign by sailing in their 1st international regatta together in the class on July 30th, up against the world’s best in the class. The team came away with a 3rd and 2nd in races 8 and 9 of the regatta, and are currently sitting in 54th position overall, in a fleet of 94 boats after 16 races. This is a terrific effort for the team, who with time will no doubt steadily improve with training. After the qualifying series Hansen saidHappy to finish a tough qualifying series with some good results in the light breeze. Many lessons learnt so far in our first international 49er regatta, hopefully got all the mistakes out of the way, bring on the finals”.

Australia has a total of 5 Mens teams competing in the 49er men’s class and 4 women’s teams competing in the 49er fx class. Fellow Australian team-mates David Gilmour and Joel Turner have also sailed a terrific regatta, and are sitting in 2nd position overall, just half a point away from Great Britain’s Dylan Fletcher-Scott and Stuart Bithell who are in 1st position.

The regatta has 2 more finals races in the series before the medal races, with racing concluding on August 4th. Congratulations Kurt and Jim! Good luck and we look forward to watching you progress in the class.
