End of Year Wrap Up - Sailing at Gosford Sailing Club

This has been a tremendous and enjoyable success over the past 8 months, with sailors from a variety of sports craft coming together to celebrate their common passion- Sailing At GSC.

Now we don’t want to sound biased towards our beautiful club so we will just state what’s been happening sailing wise and how we know everyone’s had a great time. It is immensely important to state these facts as we are coming to an end of another sailing season. So here it goes. Our last wrap up of a fantastic year.

The past year or close to it has enticed some fantastic sailors from different parts of the nation, with regattas such as the Australia Day Regatta, NSW MG14, Australian Sports Boats and Sabot State Titles, the J24 Regatta, the BBIC Gosford Gallop, Bill Bowry Memorial Regatta, Opti Chick and Traveller Regatta and of course the up-coming Len Walpole Regatta all being held out of GSC. Now although all these events have attracted lots of talented sailors, who had the opportunity to test out the ‘medal making’ waters Gosford Sailing Club has to offer, it is the members of the club who take part in the weekend sailing who have probably had the best time of all.

These people may include the junior sailors of the club, where there is a steady amount of youth sailors turning up each week. Despite unpredictable weather, these sailors are always eager to jump in their Sabot, Optimist, Flying 11 or RS Feva in the effort to grow their skills and have a fun time out on the water. They may also include the Mixed Fleet, Laser and Etchell sailors who have certainly got out on the water to have a blast no matter their variety of skill or age. Some sailors came along to try out a new boat, whilst other came to sail the same one they have been on for the past 20 years!

Another eagerly growing group which has steadily grown in numbers has been the Start Crewing and Helming Sailors, who may be new to sailing but always seem to come back for more. The particular success of this program has been viewed as the 2 annual courses the club had to offer were both completely sold out, with around 40 sailors enrolled into each course.

The Yacht section is also one hard to waver the success from, where each and every Wednesday night they hold the Twilight races at 5:30pm. This has been particularly enticing to newer sailors as there always seems to be an eye-catching theme such as ‘Superman’ or ‘Priscilla’ where all sailors can have a laugh, whilst being serious out on the race course. The Sunday Yacht races have also been quite serious, where events have taken them on journeys both inshore and offshore.

Beyond all these sailing groups we have also had the tremendous efforts of the weekly volunteers, who help organise and run the weekly sailing. This has been evident through the Saturday racing, where around 7 life members of the club all help out in various ways on a regular basis. Of course we cannot forget the work of sailing committees behind the scenes, which helps out on many different classes.
So, to wrap it up it seems there is an enormous sailing community out there who all come to the club every week to have a great time. Whilst they may take part in various regattas far away, or compete in different classes with very different skill levels they always seem to come back. Why? Because Gosford Sailing Club really does offer the best sailing there is and there’s no doubt they have a great time out on the water.
