Wrap up: Etchell State Championships

"Three Gosford Etchells were towed across across Broken Bay and into Pittwater,  where Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club hosted the 2016/17 NSW State Championships. The regatta, staged off Palm Beach headland, attracted 38 boats and conditions ranged from light to 15-plus knots and challenging choppy rolling swell, with boats surfing well downwind. All enjoyed the experience sailing against some of the best in the business.

The top performing Gosford boat was Ivy, which finished 29th overall, best result 21, skippered by John Denton, with crew Graeme Sheldon and Roy Leslie. They were also seventh in the grand masters division. Next best was Curved Air, 35th, best result 26th, skippered by George Johnston, with crew Justin Gurdol and Mark Thomson.

They were followed by The Don, 36th, best result 28, skippered by Don Wilson, with Michael Law and Brian Zemanek on the main and spinnaker and Peter McIntosh at his first Etchells  titles as forward hand, the six races providing a great learning experience.
