South Aussie’s MGRL Summer 9’s 2015/16 Round 2

Game 1 saw a clash of the mount teams with the Blue Lake Knights defeating the South East Dragons 46-40 in a tight contest. As always with these two teams there was no holding back, with the Dragons quick to find their feet and put early pressure on the Knights. With a few regular starters missing from both teams, the Dragons took advantage of the Knights inexperienced team to score five tries through Ethan Clayton, Jayden Walker, Jay Mariano, Mathew Ikin and Mitchel June, and five successful conversions to Mathew Ikin. Trailing 30-12 at halftime, the Knights found their feet in the second half and came out hard and fast and put the pressure back on the Dragons with a try in the third minute. This scoring effort from ‘the flying fish’ made the Knights snap out of their slump and come back into the game. The intensity and pressure from both teams picked up and saw some great football played. Unfortunately for the Dragons, the Knights were able to make a three try turnaround and stole the game with a last minute try to Conway Johnson sealing the six point win.

Game 2 saw the Naracoorte Jets defeat an undermanned Horsham Panthers 72-14. With plenty of new faces for both teams, the Jets were quick to take advantage of their numbers on the bench and ran the Panthers off their feet through the pace of their quicker young players in particular Dasharn Mokare. Leading 34-4 at halftime, the Jets made the most of their fresh legs in the second half. Credit to the Panthers who fought the entire game, which allowed Panthers James Kalm to run in three tries for his side. Unfortunately the panthers were not able to match the Jets who, led by veteran Tony McCarthy, ran in a total of 14 tries for the game. Other standout players were the Jets Tahmykah Rippy, Dasharn and Tui Mokare.

Round 3 will see rugby league in Horsham, Victoria, with Jets verse Knights and Panthers verse Dragons on Saturday October 24th.
