MGRL Summer 9’s Round 9 Wrap-up

In game 1, Naracoorte Jets 38 defeated Blue Lake Knights 16 in a top of the table clash. Jets with the home-ground advantage, were the first to get on the scoreboard through reliable Tony McCarthy who crossed the line just minutes into the game. The Knights with fill-in players, continued attacking but the Jets formidable defence saw the Knights struggle maintaining the ball and completing their sets. Jets controlled the first half of the game with solid hit ups from Josh Johnson, McCarthy & Tui Makoare, and impressive footwork and ball play from their smaller players including Basie Lewis.

Leading the halftime break 24-0, Jets continued their physical pressure on the Knights in the second half. An unforced error by the Jets resulted in a hard charging Ben Goodman to score Knights first try of the game. Although this effort lifted the Knights team spirit, the Jets were quick to respond through Captain Makoare and Tim McCall who scored their own tries moments later. The Knights persevered through some huge runs and good hit ups from Llyod Pearce-rasin, Dan Hunt, and Goodman that resulted in Brenton Hodge scoring in the corner after some quick ball movement. Hunt followed this up with his own try after a sprint down the field. But the Jets offence proved too strong as Tahmykah Rippey broke through the Knights defensive line on the final siren, taking his side to a 22 point victory.

In game 2, South East Dragons 38 defeated Horsham Panthers 26 in a competitive game of rugby league. Panthers came out attacking and showed that they are a competitive side in the competition with the halftime lead of 16-10. After only scoring two tries in the opening half, the Dragons fought back in the second half and scored five tries to Panthers two, to win the game by 12 points.

After Round 9, the Jets have snatched top of the ladder with 14 points, followed by Knights on 12 points, Dragons on 10 points, and Panthers at the bottom with 6 points.

In the final competition round (R10) on Saturday March 14th at East Gambier Football Grounds, Knights will verse Dragons at 4:30pm, and Panthers will verse Jets at 5:30pm.
