MGRL Summer 9’s Round 8 Wrap-up

In game 1, Naracoorte Jets 32 defeated South East Dragons 30 in an exciting game in windy and wet conditions. Dragons Captain Mitch June was quick to step up and get his side on the scoreboard in the second minute of the game. Jets up and comer Antonio Lopez was quick to retaliate with his own try. Although the ball was difficult to control, both sides make the best of the wet conditions with Jets scoring two successive tries that gave them a 8 point buffer leading into the halftime break. In the dying seconds before halftime, Dragons Mathew Ikin managed to score and made the score 14-12 Jets way. Both teams came out firing in the second half, with great offensive play that saw try for try. The Dragons snatched the lead through successful conversions by June. With three minutes remaining, the Dragons were up by six points and looked likely to secure their second win in a row. But in a game winning effort, Jets Captain Tui Makoare scored twice in the final minutes of the game and stole the win.

In game 2, Blue Lake Knights 36 defeated Horsham Panthers 6 in a top verse bottom clash. The Knights controlled the flow of the game but untidy errors in their attacking formations saw the Panthers defensive line hold off scoring opportunities. The Knights persevered and through their relentless attack, scored four tries in the opening half. The Panthers attacking and defensive efforts paid off when James Kalms got his side on the board after a 40 metre sprint through the Knights defence. Leading 18-6 at halftime, Knights Lelo and Daniel Fisher took charge in the second half and both crossed the line to score. Quick footwork from the Knights smaller players and solid defensive work from Nathan Roach, kept the Panthers scoreless in the second half and gave the Knights their fifth win of the season.

After Round 8, the Knights have jumped ahead of the Jets for top of the ladder with 12 points, Jets follow also on 12 points, Dragons on 8 points, and Horsham Panthers at the bottom with 6 points.

Round 9 on Saturday March 7th in Naracoorte, Jets will verse Knights at 4:30pm, and Dragons will verse Panthers at 5:30pm.
