MGRL Summer 9’s Round 7 Wrap-up
In game 1, Naracoorte Jets 20 defeated Gambier Warriors 0 due to a forfeit by the Warriors.
In game 2, South East Dragons 30 defeated Blue Lake Knights 26 in a close game in sweltering conditions. Due to the weather, the game was played in 10 minute quarters but this did not slow down either side. Both teams came out firing and went set for set before Knights newcomer Jak Ryan broke through Dragons line and offloaded to Lloyd Peirce-Rasin who scored. A successful conversion by Conway Johnson gave Knights a 6-nil lead at quarter time.
The impenetrable defence and unstoppable offence of Dragons Stewart McLaughlin and Justin Spong allowed brother duo Jayden and Rordon Walker to score twice in the second quarter. Rattled by the Dragons attacking play, the Knights responded with the speedy styling’s of Lelo Baleni and Donny Ward resulting in a Knights score on the halftime siren, which levelled the scores at 10-all.
In the third term, tempers flared by both sides as Dragons Jay Mariano used his pace to score in the opening minutes. Knights Ward continued to make effective defensive tackles, but it was not enough to stop the attacking plays of Dragons Mitch June and Rordon Walker who scored two unanswered tries before ¾ time.
The Knights came out attacking in the final quarter, with an athletic run by Ben Goodman setting up Ward to score in the opening minute. Dragons Jarrod Mansell showed his form as he assisted Rordon Walker with his fourth try of the day. Minutes later, Knights retaliated with Ward scoring his second try of the game followed by Ryan sprinting the length of the field to score his first.
With one minute remaining, a controversial umpiring decision saw the game tying try disallowed and the final siren sound for the Knights first loss of the season.
