MGRL Summer 9’s Round 2 Wrap-up

In game 1, Blue Lake Knights 46 defeated South East Dragons 28 in a highly contested game of rugby league. Dragons came out attacking scoring in the first minute of the game, but Knights quickly retaliated with their own scoring opportunity. The first half of the game saw both sides score one-for-one with Dragons leading at halftime 18-12. Not much changed in the second half, with both sides continuing their offensive play and capitalising on the scoreboard. Dragons’ brothers Rordon and Jayden Walker led their team from the charge with one try apiece, whilst new recruit and newcomer to the game Rob Povey proved his worth in the side with two tries and two conversions. Although the Dragons converted four of their five tries, the Knights ran away with the game scoring five tries in the last 10 minutes. Man of the match was Knights playmaker Lelo who showed crafty footwork to score four tries and three conversions. Other standout players were Knights Nathan Roach and Ben Goodman for their hard-hitting defensive work, and the Dragons’ Rordan brothers.

In game 2, Naracoorte Jets 46 defeated Gambier Warriors 20 in front of a home crowd. Although Warriors had forfeited to the Jets due to a lack of player numbers, great sportsmanship was shown by the other Mount Gambier clubs’ players who filled in for the Warriors. The 2014 Premiers in the Jets showed their knowledge of the game and unity as a team, as they scored four unanswered tries in the opening half. After halftime, the miss-match Warriors side created some good plays and made a contest of the game. However, the Jets continued their scoreboard dominance in the second half with Arlen Waihape and Antonio Lopez scoring two tries apiece. The Warriors preserved with Shane ‘Bro’ Davis leading the way with his constant hard driving hit-ups and solid defence. Man of the match was Jets Tui Makoare who was an unstoppable force in attack with an impressive 60 metre try late in the game. Other standout players were Jets Kyme Lewis who scored two tries and one conversion and Warriors Shane Davis.
