Adelaide’s Roosters win MGRL South Aussie Hotel 9’s Cup

Seven local, intrastate and interstate teams competed in the all-day 9 a-side knock-out Carnival that included free family entertainment.

In cold and windy conditions, each team played each other once over seven rounds of hard-hitting rugby league action that tested team’s physical fitness and playing ability with many non-rugby league players competing.

In round 1, a MGRL 2014 Grand Final rematch between Naracoorte Jets and South Eastern Dragons saw Dragons defeat the Premiers 16-12 in a very close match.

After four rounds, Victoria’s Warrnambool Plovers were undefeated with four wins, Roosters were on three wins, Blue Lake Knights were on two wins, Gambier Warriors, Dragons, and Jets were on one win apiece, and Victoria’s Horsham were yet to win a game.

The last three rounds saw a variety of close and competitive games and some run-away games with team’s fitness levels tested and some losing players to injuries. The conclusion of the seven rounds, which equalled 21 20-minute games, saw Knights verse Jets for the MGRL 9’s Shield and Roosters verse Plovers for the South Aussie Hotel 9’s Cup.

The MGRL 9’s Shield Grand Final saw a scoreless first half with both teams defence holding strong. After halftime, Jets persevered their try-line with Hoani Simmonds (9) pushing through Knights defensive line to score. Knights quickly retaliated and scored minutes later. With three minutes remaining, scores were level at 6-all as both teams continued attacking. A late push by Jets saw Tony McCarthy (12) score in the corner and seal the 12-6 win. Player of the Match was Knights Nathan Roach who set-up multiple scoring opportunities in the narrow loss.

In the South Aussie Hotel 9’s Cup Grand Final, Roosters continued their undefeated streak in a display of physical fitness. Roosters used their athletic ability to score three tries to Plovers nil before halftime. Plovers were close to scoring on a number of occasions with quick ball movement but Roosters defence held strong. Roosters ran away with the game and won 40-0. Player of the Match was Roosters Alex Walding who scored two tries. Other awards included the West End Player of the Cup Series that was awarded to Plovers Charlie and the Church and Palmer Wines Player of the Shield Series that was awarded to Jets Kyme Lewis.

MGRL President Daniel Hansen was extremely happy with the carnival and the spirit the games were played in.

“There was great sportsmanship shown by all teams and some great rugby league action on display,” Mr Hansen says. “We are looking forward to our upcoming Summer 9’s Competition that kicks off early January 2015, and then hosting another Carnival later in the year.”

MGRL would like to thank all the teams, volunteers, referees, event sponsors, committee members, spectators and everyone who made the event possible and a great day of rugby league action.
