2014 Mt Gambier 9’s Cup Grand Final

In their inaugural year, Mt Gambier RL’s Head of the Steering Committee Ben Goodman says everyone is happy with how the game is developing in Mt Gambier.

“At a committee meeting last night, everyone is impressed and happy with how the competition is going,” Mr Goodman says. “Rugby League has been well embraced by the community, with a lot of boys coming over from different sports and having a go.”

The 9’s Cup competition played over six weeks saw physical and highly-skilled games played by the four new clubs in Gambier Warriors, Blue Lake Knights, Naracoorte Jets, and Eastern Dragons. The Jets finished undefeated and top of the table with six wins, followed by Dragons with four wins, and the Warriors and Knights with one win apiece.

Goodman and the Mt Gambier RL committee are already looking ahead to a Representative game later in the year and the development of a Women’s and Junior’s competition.

“We believe there is enough interest to develop a Women’s competition and a few junior team’s for next season,” Mr Goodman says. “There’s a lot to look forward to for NRL in Mount Gambier.”
