Mount Gambier RL 9’s Cup Wrap-up Round 5

Naracoorte Jets 30 defeated Gambier Warriors 18 in a close 1st verse 3rd contest. The Jets looked to continue their unbeaten streak and came out attacking scoring twice in the opening five minutes of play. Warriors were quick to retaliate and levelled the scores at 12-all before Jets scored their third try just before halftime. Trailing 18-12, Warriors Cori Kennedy came out strong and scored early in the second half. Another successful conversion by Kennedy levelled the scores once again. But the Jets with experienced players and numbers on the bench, ran out 12 point winners. Best on ground was Jets Kyme Lewis who played an exceptional attacking and defensive game. Other standout players were Warriors Baptiste Evans who scored one try, and Jets Tui Makoare who scored one try and one conversion.

Eastern Dragons 30 defeated Blue Lake Knights 18 in another competitive and entertaining game of rugby league. The Knights with nothing to lose came out firing and scored twice in the opening five minutes of play. But the Dragons were quick to regather themselves and showed why they are true flag contenders, scoring three tries before halftime. Leading 16-8 at halftime, Dragons continued their dominance with Mitch June and Dylan Gull both crossing the line early in the second half. Unsuccessful conversions kept Knights in the game who showed their improvement since the start of the season. Knight’s new recruit and experienced player Lelo proved valuable scoring his own try and assisting Nathan Hay with a scoring opportunity. With less than five minutes remaining and the margin only six points, Dragons used good ball movement to gain much needed ground and set-up a last attacking effort that saw Captain Mitch June score and seal the win. Best on ground was Knights Lelo who scored one try. Other standout players were Dragons Rordan Walker who scored two tries, and Knights Conway Johnson who scored one try and one conversion.

Round 6 at East Gambier Football Club on Friday September 5th, will see Gambier Warriors v Blue Lake Knights at 6.30pm and Eastern Dragons v Naracoorte Jets at 7.40pm.
