Solomon Islands beats Tahiti 5-1

OFC release - The Solomon Islands got its second win of the 2003 OFC U-17 Qualifying Tournament, easily beating Tahiti 5-1, at the Maroochydore Soccer Centre last night. With several changes to its starting line-up, George Cowie's charges were ahead 2-0 at the break and were able to score three more goals in the second half. Tahiti managed a goal in the second half to Hiroana Poroiae and was determined throughout the match but was outclassed in the end.
Benjamin Totori scored a double for the Solomon Islands, both goals coming in the first half. While Tahiti is resigned to the bottom of the Group B standings, it has a chance to record its first win on Saturday in the group fourth round stage when it faces Tonga, another team without a win thus far. The Tongans will be eyeing that match as its chance to rectify the imbalance which sees 36 goals already scored against them.
The remaining matches for the Solomon Islands are a tough prospect, facing Vanuatu next then New Zealand next Monday in the last round. They have a slim chance of taking the top spot in Group B but need to win both their remaining games handsomely and rely on other outcomes for the remaining fixtures.
