MATCH OF THE ROUND
NEWCASTLE OLYMPIC 1-3 EDGEWORTH EAGLES
Edgeworth are one win away from an historic premiership after defeating Newcastle Olympic 3-1 in a high-quality Match of the Round at Darling Street Oval on Sunday.
The Eagles notched their 10th victory of the season with the triumph as they edged closer to a record-breaking 13th title for the club.
Dylan Holz fired the away side into the lead in the 22nd minute with a header from a Josh Rose cross as the Eagles took a 1-0 lead to the break.
Olympic got back into the game after half-time with Jared Muller continuing his stellar form in front of goal to level the scores and tally his seventh goal of the season.
With the match drawing to a close, Kristian Brymora scored the crucial goal for the Eagles in the 82nd minute with a curling shot to find the top corner.
Damon Green sealed the victory slotting home from close range to make it 3-1 and continue the Eagles hot streak at the top of the table.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game. Olympic needed points but I’m just happy with the boys. They just keep getting the job done,” Edgeworth player-coach Josh Rose said.
“We were down on troops and the young boys [who] came on at the end gave us enough and we got the result.
“It was a well-rounded performance. Everyone had a bit to play. Kristian was more involved in the play and [it] was fantastic to see him get that goal and set up Greeny. Greeny off the bench was fantastic and almost changed the game.
“We haven’t spoken about the premiership but now the reality is next week we can win and it will be that little bit of extra motivation but we need to go to Maitland and try and win.”
LAKE MACQUARIE CITY 2-3 BROADMEADOW MAGIC
Broadmeadow Magic scored two late goals, including a stoppage time winner, to sink Lake Macquarie with a 3-2 victory at Macquarie Field on Saturday.
Ryan Ensor scored the important third goal to earn the victory for Magic and maintain their position of second on the table.
Mitch Rooke opened the scoring for the away side in the 28th minute but Lakes would hit back with the determination to keep their season alive.
Two goals from Campbell Ross and Chris Berlin after half-time gave the Roosters the lead.
But Broadmeadow would show why they are in second place to rally home with two late goals, the first coming through James Virgili and then Ensor in stoppage time.
Magic remain in the premiership hunt but will need Edgeworth to drop points and win all their games to achieve first place while Lake Macquarie remain at the bottom of the table with their sixth loss in a row.
Broadmeadow have the bye next round while Lake Macquarie will travel to play Lambton.
WESTON WORKERS 1-1 LAMBTON JAFFAS
Two sides battling for a finals position, Weston and Lambton, played out a tense 1-1 draw at Rockwell Automation Park on Saturday.
The pair couldn’t be split after 90 minutes, with both teams frustrated they could not reaffirm themselves and beat a close rival on the table.
Both defences stood firm in the first half to keep out any goals before Kale Bradbery broke the deadlock in the 65th minute.
Weston responded quickly through Aaron Niyonkuru with the attacker on hand in the 73rd minute to equalise for the Bears.
Both teams fought hard but could not find the elusive second goal to leave all square.
The two clubs remain equal on 15 points with Lambton ahead in fifth on goal difference.
ADAMSTOWN ROSEBUD 0-6 MAITLAND FC
Maitland has emphatically re-emerged into the winner’s circle after smashing Adamstown Rosebud 6-0 at Adamstown Oval on Sunday.
Braedyn Crowley scored a clinical hat-trick to take his tally to 10 for the season and emerge as the new leader in the race for the golden boot, with the attacker looking to make it two years in a row picking up the individual award.
Ryan Clarke, Joel Wood and James Thompson scored the other goals as Adamstown played the majority of the fixture with 10 men after losing skipper Luke Rutledge in the 18th minute.
After a tough couple of results, the defending premiers needed a win and will be pleased to score plenty of goals.
The win moves the side back into the top four ahead of their clash with 2019 grand final opponents Edgeworth next weekend.
Adamstown are now out of the running for finals and will be playing for pride when they take on Valentine next round.
Valentine FC and Charlestown Azzurri had the bye.
