United & Tigers share points in stoppage time thriller.

Gungahlin United 2 (Augustine Bangura 19’, Ben Obst 90+7’) drew. Tigers FC 2 (Nicolas Villafane 45’, Christian Junna 90+4’)

A goal from either side in injury time saw Gungahlin United and Tigers FC share the points in a 2-2 draw at GEO on Sunday.

The draw means United maintained their status inside the top four, while Tigers fell to sixth after Belconnen United picked up an important 4-2 victory over Tuggeranong United in Kambah.

Nicolas Villafane came close to opening the scoring early on, but goalkeeper Jason Denham prevented the Argentine with a fantastic one-hand save and if the ball had gone in, the offside flag was up regardless.

Tigers would threaten again with another opportunity four minutes later as Mark Shields controlled a cross at the back post, but he flashed his shot high over the crossbar.

Despite the away side’s chances, Gungahlin opened the scoring five minutes later as Augustine Bangura made a great individual run to beat Jakob Cole.

United were then denied a second goal as Jason O’Dwyer’s header was denied by a stunning save from Cole that deflected the bar over the goal and out.

It looked as though Marcial Munoz’s team would head into the break with the advantage, but a penalty for handball on the stroke of the break was converted by Villafane to bring his team level heading into the sheds.

Antoni Timotheou had a chance to take the lead back moments into the second half only to pull his effort across goal, and then both sides traded chances for much of the second half.

But neither side could make it count and all the action soon unfolded in a few wild minutes of stoppage time.

In the fourth minute of stoppage time Tigers set up a free-kick after Misko Naumoski brought down Robbie Deeley on the break, and Christian Junna found space at the back post to head home past Denham and give his side what was almost certainly the match winner.

But the hosts did not relent, instead breaking down the other end and when Timotheou’s low cross beat two defenders and found Ben Obst at the back to convert it capped off a breathtaking few minutes of football.

United now host Canberra FC next weekend in an important clash for both teams while Tigers have the bye and will look on nervously to see how their finals rivals get on.
