NPLW Round 12 Wrap

Belconnen United 5 (Jasmine Maguire 8', 29', Caitlin Munoz 29', Maddy Whittall 54', Leah Carnegie 77') def. Woden-Weston 0

Belconnen United continued their perfect season on Saturday as a clinical performance gave them a 5-0 win over Woden-Weston at McKellar Park.

Jasmine Maguire got her side off to a strong start when she netted just eight minutes in, but Woden-Weston kept United out for a while from there, looking to work their way back into the match.

However the hosts blew the game open just ahead of the half hour mark as Magure and Caitlin Munoz scored within moments of each other to suddenly push the lead to three goals and the score remained that way at the break.

Maddy Whittall netted her 11th goal of the season as United came out of the blocks strong to begin the second half, and Leah Carnegie rounded out the scoring with 13 minutes to play to seal a comfortable victory.

Belconnen will now face Canberra FC in a grand final rematch on Sunday, while Woden-Weston look to close the gap to the top four against Gungahlin United.

Canberra FC 1 (Brigette Wright 53’) drew. Canberra United Academy 1 (Aoife Colvill 51’)

Canberra FC had their 10-match winning streak halted on Sunday as they drew 1-1 with the Canberra United Academy at Deakin.

Full report here.

Tuggeranong United Football Club 1 (Kristy Helmers 60') def. by Monaro Panthers FC 3 (Zoe Szeremet 29', 78', Alicia Meuronen 48')

A confident display from Monaro at Kambah on Sunday saw them keep Tuggeranong winless on the season and move within three points of fifth spot.

The match began as a tough battle between the two sides, but Monaro began to take the upper hand and a goal from Zoe Szeremet with just under 30 minutes on the clock gave them an early advantage in the contest.

They remained up by a goal until the break, but Alicia Meuronen doubled that advantage only three minutes into the second half to give the Panthers momentum and edge them closer to victory.

Tuggeranong refused to lie down and Kristy Helmers’ goal with 30 minutes to play put them back within a goal and right back in the match, but they were unable to close the gap further from there.

With 12 minutes to go Szeremet grabbed her second and effectively sealed the victory as the Panthers saw out the 90 minutes for their third win of the season.

They will now face a good test against Canberra Olympic next weekend, who they have already beaten once this season while United will continue to search for a victory when they take on the Academy.

Canberra Olympic Football Club 2 (Shaquille Chong 80', Emma Guo 90') def. by Gungahlin United Football Club 3 (Freyja Jacobson 5', 58', Charlotte Lynch 38')

Gungahlin United saw off a fast-finishing Canberra Olympic side to continue a strong run of form and move four points clear of Olympic in fourth spot on the table.

United were on the front foot early and as with the last time they played Olympic, looked to hit them out wide. Freyja Jacobson continued her stellar season with a great finish from a cross just five minutes in to set the tone and put Gungahlin ahead.

Olympic looked to make inroads through the middle but their usual attacking threats were nullified well by a Gungahlin side clearly equipped with a game plan.

Seven minutes before the break the visitors struck again, this time as Charlotte Lynch steadied on the edge of the area before firing home into the corner. That set the score as 2-0 come half time with the hosts requiring a strong effort to get back into it, but 13 minutes after the break Jacobson seemingly sealed it with another good finish to push the lead to three goals.

Eddie Senatore’s side would not relent though, and Shaquille Chong scored with 10 minutes to go to give Olympic a fighting chance. Then, in the final minute of stoppage time Emma Guo cut the gap to one as they came charging home but it was too little, too late as United saw out the final minutes to record an important victory.

United now face Tuggeranong United in a rescheduled clash tonight, while Canberra Olympic will take on the Panthers a Riverside Stadium.
