NPL2 Semi-Finals Wrap

O’Connor Knights 2 (Josip Jadric 59’, Adam Seselja 112’) drew. Canberra White Eagles 2 (Ohio Asikhia 49’, David Kemp 110’)

O’Connor Knights won 5-4 on penalties

The O’Connor Knights booked their spot in the NPL2 decider with a thrilling 5-4 penalty shootout win over the Canberra White Eagles at Woden Park on Sunday.

The two sides were locked at 1-1 at full-time, and then 2-2 after extra time, but a solo save by Knights goalkeeper Jason Denham in the shootout lifted O’Connor to a dramatic victory.

Ohio Asikhia put the White Eagles in front shortly after half-time, when he tapped in a low cross from Zinelabiddine Eljammoudi at the near post.

But the Knights levelled the scores 10 minutes later, as striker Josip Jadric burst down the left-flank before cutting in and sending a shot past White Eagles goalkeeper Nick Owen.

The White Eagles had the better of the second-half chances, and the result may have been different if not for the heroics of Denham in goals.

Neither side could find the breakthrough before full-time, nor could they during the first period of extra time.

But with 10 minutes to play in the second period, David Kemp struck a line drive past Denham and into the back of the net, appearing to give the White Eagles an unassailable lead.

It lasted for less than two minutes though, as Adam Seselja curled the ball into the top corner following a beautiful passage of play down the right-flank.

Denham then denied Eljammoudi in the shootout, before Greg Bullock slotted the winning penalty to send O’Connor into the Grand Final.

They’ll await the winner of Sunday’s preliminary final between White Eagles and ANU, who edged past Queanbeyan City in the elimination final earlier.
