NPL Round 7 Wrap

Woden-Weston 4 (Phakedi Manda 5’, Martin Deng 48’, Frederick Olaide Yinka-Kehinde 77’, Bul Juach 83’)drew. Monaro Panthers 4 (Sam Smith 55’, Burak Kocak 60’, Ed McCarthy 81’, Michael Piccolo 90’)

Woden-Weston and Monaro shared the points on Saturday at Woden Park as the Panthers came from behind three times to snatch a point in the 90th minute.

Rey Castro’s side got off to the perfect start as they looked for a win when they were played advantage from a foul and Phakedi Manda was found by a good cross and made no mistake to slide the ball home.

Woden-Weston went close again through Deng Aleer Deng only for a great covering tackle by Sam LaVella to deny him and Mitch Weeden made a good save near the half hour mark to deny the hosts, only for play to be called back for a bad challenge anyway.

The Wanderers went into the break leading by a goal, but extended that just three minutes into the second half through Martin Deng’s finish. It looked as though Castro’s side could pull away but when Sam Smith scored his second of the season seven minutes later and Burak Kocak levelled proceeding with 30 minutes to play it was suddenly game on.

That was the first time the Panthers had scored more than once in a game this season, but just as the game appeared to settle down briefly, Frederick Olaide Yinka-Kehinde put his side back ahead with 13 minutes to play. That lasted just four minutes thanks to Ed McCarthy’s strike with nine minutes left, but there was hard luck for Monaro as the hosts were awarded a penalty with seven minutes to play, and Bul Juach made no mistake from the spot to put Woden-Weston up 4-3.

However there was still a twist remaining, and Michael Piccolo struck in the final minute of regulation to steal a point for the visitors on a wild afternoon and leave them two points ahead of Woden-Weston.

Riverina Rhinos 0 def. by Tigers FC 7 (Mark Shields 8’, 70’, Dom Colucciello 21’, Nicolas Villafane 52’, Niko Kalfas 67’, Jared Tonini 73’, Kyle Ormeno 86’)

Tigers FC bounced back from a big loss to Canberra FC last week with a seven-goal hammering of the Rhinos in Griffith on Saturday evening.

Mark Shields opened the proceedings just eight minutes in as he grabbed his first goal, and Dom Colucciello’s effort in the 21st minute was the only other goal of the first half in an even contest between two sides looking to rebound from losses.

But the second half was where things got ugly, and Nicolas Villafane continued his stellar season with a good strike seven minutes in.

The Rhinos pushed back but were unable to find a goal of their own, and when Niko Kalfas pushed the lead to four goals with just over half an hour remaining it was worrying for the Rhinos.

Three minutes later Shields had a brace and Jared Tonini grabbed a goal of his own after another three minutes to push the lead to six goals with 17 minutes left to play.

That looked to be it but with only four minutes left the visitors were awarded a penalty, and Kyle Ormeno made no mistake to finish the chance and round off the scoreline.

Rhinos now welcome Belconnen to Griffith in round eight with both sides having suffered heavy losses, while Tigers will welcome Canberra Olympic to Nijong Oval on Sunday afternoon.
