Cachia not concerned despite key departures

Frank Cachia is confident his Canberra Olympic side will have the firepower to stay at the top of the National Premier Leagues Capital Football despite key departures ahead of Season 2018.

With Stephen Domenici set to head interstate to play and Josh Gulevski having left to Gungahlin United and then Western Sydney Wanderers, Cachia will be looking elsewhere for goals this season.

Golden Boot winner Domenici and young gun Gulevski contributed 34 goals between them, making up over half of Olympic’s total during the regular season, but Cachia believes that while it will be difficult, his side can cope.

“It is difficult, and it is what we have been grappling with the last few weeks,” Cachia said.

“You can’t replace Domenici. You can find ways of filling the gap, but you don’t replace a player who has won two Player of the Year awards and two Golden Boots and has been tagged as one of the best players outside the A-League.”

“So our focus in the last few weeks once it was clear he was moving has been on other ways of finding goals.”

As well as the loss of Domenici and Gulevski, Olympic have also seen Jordan Tsekenis depart to focus on his studies, however Cachia is confident that two key additions can help Olympic remain at the top.

“We brought in Nik Popovich for exactly this reason, when we had an idea that Stephen was looking to move to an interstate club and maybe put himself on a bigger stage. So Nik will be very important, and we’ve brought in Roko Strika who has been training with the club since July, and I think he will be one of the standout players in the league,” Cachia said.

“But we also have guys like Jeremy Habtemariam, Michael John, guys that can pop up and score goals whenever so they will help fill that gap too.”

Olympic will open their season in Round 2 on Sunday 8th April, taking on Monaro Panthers at O’Connor Enclosed.
