Cup Wrap: Adelaide City v Croydon Kings

Andreas Wiens scored two second half goals as Croydon Kings defeated Adelaide City 2-0 to triumph in the Final of Westfield FFA Cup Qualifying at Elite Systems Football Centre on Sunday.

The striker latched on to a pair of Rocco Visconte’s crosses to send the Kings into Wednesday’s draw for the Round of 32 in the Westfield FFA Cup.

Croydon attacker Shaun McGreevy says it’s a massive result for the club.

“It was a tough game. We had a lot of chances, they had some too, but I felt we had the better of it. We could’ve grabbed one or two before half time,” he stated.

“Mark [Brazzale] can be inspirational, he pumps you up and was just what we needed at half time to help us over the line.

“It’s a massive result. We’ve been looking forward to it and now that we have qualified we’ll look to do well against whoever we are drawn against. It’s good for the club and the players.”

Adelaide City’s Nicholas Bucco says the loss will give the team added motivation to finish the season strongly.

“It was an even first half in which both sides had chances. We hit the post and forced a few good saves and they looked dangerous from crosses and set pieces. They took their chances and we didn’t,” he said.

“I felt that if we scored first we would have gone on to win it. Even after they scored the opener we could have found an equaliser.

“It’s our first Cup Final loss in three years and it has left us bitterly disappointed. This gives us motivation to go on and win the Grand Final.”

Adelaide City had the better of the early stages with Joel Allwright striking the woodwork from distance in the 12th minute.

Just three minutes later Fumiya Suzuki was also denied by the post as he cut inside from the left and curled his effort past Nicholas Munro in the Kings goal.

Croydon responded less than 60 seconds later as Jarrod Brazzale’s header flashed just wide from a corner.

Suzuki tried another curler, only for Munro to deny the Japanese player with a fine stop.

The Kings looked dangerous from set pieces and after a corner was flicked on at the near-post Wiens directed his header just over the top.

Croydon grabbed the opening goal in the 57th minute as Visconte’s cross from the left was met by Wiens, his header giving Ryan Veitch in the City goal no chance.

Nicholas Bucco connected sweetly with a cross, but his side footed attempt from the edge of the penalty area ended the wrong side of the post.

Veitch kept the Black and Whites in the hunt when he made a superb double stop to deny McGreevy six minutes from time.

However, the Kings sealed their seventh Federation Cup triumph and first since 2000 when Wiens guided Visconte’s cross into the bottom corner in the 86th minute.
