Round 2 National Premier League Wrap

Traditional rivals White City and Raiders played out an entertaining 1-1 draw in Round 2 of the South Australian National Premier League at Frank Mitchell Park on Friday.

Nathan Fleetwood gave Raiders the lead just before half-time, but Lachlan Barr nodded in the equaliser 10 minutes from time. Both sides have drawn their opening two matches.

White City Coach Rob Saraceno was again pleased with his side’s fighting spirit.

“Raiders were organised and had the better of the first half, but we responded well to get a point. I think it was a fair result,” said Saraceno.

“I told the guys at half-time that we weren’t out of it. Just like against MetroStars we went a goal behind, but it was pleasing to hit back. We made some changes and brought on a few youngsters who contributed well.

“I think we can work on being more dynamic going forward - although we have a makeshift attack right now with some players missing. Also, we need to be more consistent. We haven’t conceded from open play yet, so that’s a positive.”

Raiders Coach Carl Maynard saw improvement from the opening round, but admitted his side missed a chance to grab their first win.

“The performance was not too bad, but we let ourselves down when the game was there to be won. We had chances to seal it and didn’t do so,” said the tactician.

“I wasn’t too happy with our first half despite the goal. On the bench we knew we needed a second after the break and that White City would be a threat, especially at set pieces.

“I’m happy we haven’t lost yet and that the guys are trying to play and doing what is asked of them, but we’ve dropped points. We were lucky to get a draw against South Adelaide and disappointed not to get all three here.”

Raiders had the best chance of the opening stages, but Elvis Kamsoba saw his effort cleared off the line.

The visitors took the lead two minutes before the interval. Fleetwood’s floated free kick deceived goalkeeper Joshua Negrean and sailed into the top corner.

Jordan O’Doherty spurned a good opportunity to extend the lead, while at the other end Nathan Bowden-Haase put his header the wrong side of the post.

White City were denied a goal due to an offside decision, however continued to push and were rewarded in the final stages from a set piece. Barr climbed highest to glance a header into the back of the net.

There was late drama as Raiders player Jackson Stephens saw a shot cleared off the line following a fantastic save by Warriors custodian Negrean.

Elsewhere, Adelaide City earned their first win of the season with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Adelaide Comets at Adelaide City Park on Friday.

Goals from Joel Allwright and Nicholas Bucco inside the opening half hour put City in command. Thomas Love added another in the second half, condemning Comets to successive three-goal defeats.

Cumberland United and MetroStars played out a scoreless draw at A.A Bailey Reserve on Saturday.

The visitors came closest to breaking the deadlock in the second half when Andrew Ciarla struck the woodwork. Foxes goalkeeper Navarro Panozzo also pulled off a fantastic late save and they had to settle for a point apiece.

West Torrens Birkalla got off the mark as they downed Western Strikers 2-1 at Jack Smith Park on Saturday.

The visitors, also defeated in Round 1, took the lead through new signing Alemayo Kabede. However, David Scalamera equalised shortly after and Birkalla grabbed the decisive goal just after half-time when John-Paul Cirillo opened his season account.

West Adelaide notched their maiden win of 2014 thanks to a 2-1 triumph over Adelaide Blue Eagles at Adelaide Shores Football Centre on Saturday.

The 2013 State League Champions were on the mark with goals from Tom Briscoe and Ricardo Da Silva. Blue Eagles had temporarily equalised through striker Kym Harris.

Croydon sit atop of the Premier League following a 1-0 success over Para Hills at Polonia Reserve on Saturday.

The Kings are the only side with a perfect record after two rounds thanks to a second half strike from Shaun McGreevy, which toppled the Knights.

Campbelltown City celebrated their first win of the campaign with a 2-1 result against South Adelaide at O’Sullivans Beach Sports Complex on Sunday.

Michael Matricciani fired the Red Devils into an early lead, before Luigi DiTroia doubled the advantage after half-time. Josh Quaynor’s late goal for the Panthers proved only a consolation.
