R11 Wrap: Raiders v West Torrens Birkalla
Raiders were victim to yet another crushing defeat at the hands of a high flying West Torrens Birkalla side.
The impressive winning streak continued as Birkalla added further woes to a Raiders team slowly descending down the table.
West Torrens man Lawrence D’Arrigo said the key to bagging all three points was no secret and was just part of the plan.
“It’s been our recipe for success the whole season. It’s us working as a team, everyone gives a hundred percent and everyone plays their role.”
Although sporting a complete opposite run in form Raiders player Jordan O’Doherty believes the team spirit in still intact after the defeat.
“I wouldn’t say it’s damaging. We know as a squad that we’re still playing good football and going in the right direction.
“At the moment the luck is not going our way but sure that will come, we know were not struggling in that sense.”
With the game deadlocked at 1-1 at the half-way mark, O’Doherty was optimistic of achieving a decent result.
“The game was very equal until they scored their second goal. The momentum was quite equal and could’ve gone either way…unfortunately for us it went to Birkalla.”
D’Arrigo certainly agreed on the physical battle and said visiting Raiders is not an easy thing.
“We knew going there it was going to be difficult. The weather evened it out it was pretty much anyone’s game.”
Both players felt that the wet conditions on game day played an important role, with momentum switching numerous time throughout the game.
O’Doherty felt his side lacked the mental ability to focus because of the weather.
“I would say a bit more concentration regarding the conditions because we were giving silly fouls away on the edge of the box. You just got to be more careful with the wet conditions.”
Despite the good result the clean sheet still eludes Birkalla, Lawrence however was proud of the defensive display.
“It was really hard, the weather played a big part, we started off a bit slow in the first half but as the game went on we started to defend better.”
It will be an uphill struggle for Raiders as they aim to get their season back on track and O’Doherty feels they will come good.
“We are creating chances it’s not like we’re not getting into the oppositions half although we are not getting the three points we’re still doing well.”
