Brunswick five stuns Box Hill

Cellar-dwellers Brunswick City won just its fourth match of 2015 in an astonishing 5-0 whitewash of 10-man Box Hill United at an overcast Dunstan Reserve.

It was an extraordinary effort from the hosts, with none more so than playmaker Anthony Ianchello.

He broke the deadlock after just 4 minutes with a shot across a goal which rocketed against the inside of the left post.

Ten minutes later he was it at again, turning a defender and shooting from his right hand side to put City up 2-0.

Ianchello came close to a hat-trick after only 17 minutes when Dimitri Vithoulkas’ cross gave him an opportunity on goal, however he only managed to hit the side netting.

Despite being two goals down, Box Hill attempted to fight its way back into the contest with some chances – Lucas Johns took a free kick from 25 yards which was easily held by Brunswick keeper Jake Crea.

Meanwhile up the other end, Brunswick made it look easy with a third goal on 25 minutes.

Vithoulkas hit a curving cross from the left side of the box which Ahmet Turer took with two touches before hitting a classy finish past Box Hill keeper Alex Connell.

The difficult task ahead of Box Hill soon became more insurmountable in the 36th minute after Ollie Paterno was sent off for a tough challenge in the box.

Brunswick was given the penalty however Juan Portillo struck it poorly, giving Connell the chance to save and clear it away.

The hosts started the second half the same way as the first – Vithoulkas scored his team’s fourth goal with a left-foot shot.

With the result a mere formality, Box Hill looked to get a goal back with Barrero one out with the keeper but it proved to be another wasted chance.

Vithoulkas had another shot on goal 58 minutes in after a long ball from defence led to Turer’s cross from the right-hand corner of the box.

Two minutes later, Turer attempted an ambitious bicycle kick but unsurprisingly did not yield any reward.

Box Hill had arguably their closest chance of the afternoon in the 69th minute through Chris Page, whose long-range shot was deflected away for a corner by the keeper.

Aaron Porcaro had a chance on 82 minutes for the visitors but Crea again was too good in goal.

With minutes to go, Brunswick once again put the pressure back on the United defence but was somewhat assisted by some clumsy passing, with Connell turning it over to Ianchello and with an empty net ahead of him his lob at goal went just over the bar.

Moments later, hat-trick-chasing Ianchello was negated by Connell, but the Box Hill keeper could only manage to knock the ball into the path of City substitute Evan Karavitis who smashed it into the empty net with ease to make it 5-0.

The hard work finally paid off for Brunswick City who looked in control for the vast majority of the match, and ensured that Box Hill’s final away trip for 2015 was one they will want to forget.
