Box Hill seals win over Bendigo with late strikes

By Andrew Bishara

Box Hill United got its first win after three consecutive draws with a 2-0 win over Bendigo City Wembley Park on Saturday.

Travis Chalk-Hatton and Lucas Johns struck late as United dominated the second half with an excellent performance.

The first half was scrappy and rough affair, as both teams seemed more intent on stamping their authority instead of playing football.

The first piece of real quality was when City's Sam Scoble got on the end of a swift counter, but his low drive was parried away by United goalkeeper Alex Connell.

United responded in kind with Chalk-Hatton having two chances in this space of a few minutes late in the half.

First he saw his half-volley dink fantastically tipped over the goal by City custodian Gianmanco Doria, before seeing his curling effort smash right off the crossbar.

Box Hill started the stronger in the second period, and Chalk-Hatton continued where he left off, seeing his 25-yard free-kick just curved away from goal.

Lucas John was next to test Doria, as he forced the keeper to push away a hard hit.

Box Hill began to control the game as the half wore on, dominating possession and pushing hard to break through the tough City unit.

Chalk-Hatton continued his one-man war trying his luck from distance again, but Doria comfortably caught his drive.

The big man finally put the ball in the back of the net with a slick hit after getting on the end of Johns' cutback pass.

The goal kicked Bendigo into action and it had a chance less than a minute later when Marcus Ryan hit a low drive for Connell to collect.

George Stefendorfas then saw his strike sizzle past the post as City pushed forwards in greater numbers.

But United killed off the game minutes from time when heavy pressure from Chalk-Hatton saw a poor defensive clearance come right to Johns.

The winger steadied himself before blasting in a superb goal leaving Doria stranded on the spot.

Inram Sankoh has two chances in the final minutes to extend United's lead, but the points were already sealed.
