Gully four stuns Greens

By Katie Lambeski

A stunning performance from Green Gully saw the side upset Bentleigh Greens 4-0 at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday afternoon.

A brace from Liam Boland either side of halftime led the way, with second half goals from Simon Tolli and Evan Christodoulou completing the rout.

Despite the wet and cold conditions throughout, the match was played at a frenetic pace and Gully took the game right up to the visitors from the first whistle.

The half would not be without controversy as a Liam McCormick free-kick from on the right flank on the edge of the penalty box hit the back of the net, only to be disallowed for offside.

Gully took the advantage in the 32nd minute, with Boland scoring his first of the day after being played in by Tolli, calmly slotting the ball home past Alistair Bray to have Gully in charge by the half-time break.

Immediately after the restart, Gully surged forward and were rewarded with a goal from Tolli, his first for the club since arriving in the mid-season transfer window.

The winger also had a hand in the third goal that all but ended the game as a contest, his cross from the left flank found Boland in the box, and the striker’s header proved unstoppable.

Similar to last week’s performance, the win was built from the back as the defence absorbed whatever Bentleigh threw at it, as a result the home side kept its second clean sheet in a row.

Christodoulou then bought up a second goal in as many weeks, catching a Bentleigh team pushing high up out of position as Boland played the attacking midfielder in for a cool finish past Bray.

The win was Gully’s third in a row, and for Bentleigh, it was the first taste of defeat for season 2015.

There is not much time for celebrations and commiserations as now both sides look ahead to midweek clashes.

Gully head to Lakeside Stadium on Tuesday night for its clash with South Melbourne, while Bentleigh hosts Melbourne Knights on Wednesday night.
