Moreland wins local derby to claim first three points

By Andrew Bishara (@_andrewbishara)

Moreland City has notched its first three points of the season with a hard fought 2-1 win over Brunswick City at Dunstan Reserve on Saturday afternoon.

Osman Kose's two goals were enough to cancel out Ahmed Turner's equaliser with the result leaving Moreland on four points after two games, while Brunswick has two losses to their name.

The visitors got off to the perfect start after two minutes, when Kose broke through the Brunswick defence and smashed a low ball that bounced off the post, but the striker was quick to pounce on the rebound to give his side the lead.

Moreland continued to pile on the pressure with Gareth Richards seeing his two headers miss their targets.

The chances spurred Brunswick into action as the home side began to create clear-cut chances of its own.

First, Turner saw his dipping freekick brilliantly pushed away by Moreland goalkeeper Brandon Galgano.

Then Juan Portillo had two chances in the space of a few minutes, first seeing his rocket shot deflect off the post, before unleashing a 25-yard bullet that Galgano tipped over the bar.

The intensity eventually paid off when Turner pounced on a loose hoofed ball as he brushed off his marker before calmly dinking the ball past Galgano.

It took Moreland just ten minutes to retake the lead in the second half.

The goal came after some lovely teamwork, with some slick passing down the wing which saw Casey Thomas put in a perfect cross to Kose.

The striker had all the time in the world to line up a first time volley, and he delivered by smashing the ball low in the net.

The game then descended into a midfield battle as needless fouls were made and both teams struggled to create any dangerous chances.

The last big moment in the game occurred in the final minute of injury time, when Portillo put Dimitri Vithoulkas through, but from saw his shot hit the side netting.
