White Eagles snatch late victory

Two second-half goals have seen Springvale White Eagles snatch a come-from-behind victory over FC Bendigo at White Eagles Stadium on Saturday.

Matthew Breeze handed Bendigo the advantage at the break, before Simo Jovanovic equalised for the hosts in the 68th minute.

Not for the first time this season, teenager Vojislav Milojevic struck the decisive blow, capping off a starring performance with a late goal to complete the 2-1 scoreline.

Despite its seven-match winless streak heading into the contest, Bendigo started proceedings with a renewed vigour and aggression, with leaders Steve Martin and Josh Romein making their voices heard.

That didn’t faze the White Eagles though, who created decent early chances but were twice denied by Sebastian Mattei’s magnificent saves.

The Bendigo ‘keeper acrobatically tipped over a Slaven Vranesevic free kick before denying Milojevic from close range with a low save.

Mattei only had to watch for the rest of the half though as Springvale blazed shots from threatening positions over the bar, with Vojislav Milojevic, Dejan Erakovic and Vranesevic the culprits.

The opening 20 minutes belonged to the White Eagles, but the momentum quickly changed in what was an embarrassing finish to the half for the hosts.

Bendigo had Springvale pushed back deep in the latter’s defence, with Breeze and Aaron Cohen allowed time and space to dominate in midfield.

Scott Millar couldn’t deal with the pressure, gifting the majority of his clearances straight back to a Bendigo shirt, while ‘keeper Anthony Casset was also wayward with his distribution as the home crowd’s collective groans grew louder.

Springvale coach Zlatko Mihajlovic lost patience, calling a premature end to Scott Millar’s day with the introduction of substitute Slavisa Saric.

The change couldn’t halt Bendigo’s momentum though, and Breeze capitalised in the 38th minute when he curled in a free kick from the edge of the box.

Breeze was feeling confident, and almost doubled the advantage soon after the break when he flicked the ball up to himself and came agonisingly close to thumping in the resulting volley from distance.

The turning point came in the 62nd minute when Cohen teed up George Slefendorfas for a gilt-edged chance, but the Bendigo striker couldn’t convert the cross from within two metres of goal.

The miss sparked Springvale into action, and it found its equaliser five minutes later when captain Simo Jovanovic flicked in Vojislav Milojevic’s corner to punish Bendigo’s slack marking.

Bendigo had no answer for Vojislav Milojevic, who burnt off every opponent as legs began to tire in the latter stages.

The winger linked up beautifully with ex-South Melbourne man Vranesevic before honouring Ryan Don Paul’s charging run into the box, but the latter met the squaring pass too early and fluffed his shot.

Steve Martin then came close to edging Bendigo ahead against the run of play, but his free kick was sensationally saved by Casset.

The away side would be left to rue a fatal error in the 84th minute however, when a turnover found Vojislav Milojevic with nothing but 25m of grass and Mattei standing in his way of a winner.

The former rising star of the month slipped a shot underneath Mattei which just beat closing defender Josh Romein on the goal-line, as the White Eagles held on for their seventh win of the season and extended Bendigo’s winless streak to eight matches.
