Northcote downs the Suns

By Adem Baroli (@adembarolli)

Goals either side of the main break helped ensure Northcote City a 3-1 victory over the Goulburn Valley Suns at McEwen Reserve on Saturday night.

Liam Wooding managed to score Northcote’s first goal of the game with their first attempt.

In only the second minute, Wooding found himself on the end of a through ball and with his first touch the former Adelaide United youth player struck from 20 yards as his shot nestled into the top corner.

Although, Northcote’s lead was soon cancelled out after Simon Colosimo headed home for the GV Suns.

Colosimo found himself unmarked from a set-piece and the central defender headed home from close range after a well-taken Ardian Vuniqi free kick.

The game managed to settle after the first five frenetic minutes, with both teams trying to assert their ascendency on the game.

GV Suns soon found itself trailing again when Marino Gasparis' inch perfect free kick sailed into the far corner, leaving Phillip Petrovski stranded.

The Suns could have been back level soon after, when striker Zachary Foxhoven found an opening and himself one-on-one with City ‘keeper Chris Theodoridis.

But Foxhoven’s attempted was thwarted by Theodoridis, as the ‘keeper dived down low to save to his left hand side.

After an entertaining first half for both sides, it was all one way in the second.

Northcote soon doubled its lead after the restart as Wade Dekker managed to beat the offside trap and slot home from close range into the bottom corner.

The visitors could’ve extended their lead on a few more occasions in the second half after both Wooding and Catalano missed guilt edged opportunities.

Victorian Premier League winning coach Goran Lozanovksi was pleased with how his side performed.

“Coming here today we knew it was going to be a tough game,” Lozanovski said.

“I thought we were first class today, we’ve been playing some good stuff over the last couple of months and picking up points which has been crucial for us.”

Meanwhile GV Suns manager David Davkovski was disappointed with his teams’ ability to retain possession.

“We turned it over in the second half 14 times plus, are they the better team? I don’t know,” Davkovski said.

“We just turned it over every time, our midfielders, defenders, I’m not going to pick anyone out but a couple of the boys turned it over for or five times.

“But that’s football, two steps forward and one step back.”

Next week the GV Suns travel to face Pascoe Vale, while City will try to make it to wins in a row when they host Heidelberg on Sunday.
