Suns fall at Oakleigh fortress

By Rory Flanagan (@Rory_Flanagan)

Oakleigh has recorded another free-scoring home victory at the expense of Goulburn Valley at Jack Edwards Reserve on Saturday night

Dean Piemonte scored either side of Dusan Bosnjak's 18th-minute strike, with Goran Zoric adding a fourth early in the second half for the Cannons, before Green Gully recruit Brian Vanega bagged a consolation for the Suns in the 4-1 scoreline.

The Cannons should have gone behind inside the opening five minutes when Zac Paraskevas blasted against the crossbar after being released by the most sumptuous of passes from Vanega.

The Suns again missed their chance to open the scoring when Ben Clarke stormed through on goal, only to be denied by a superb John Honos save.

From the following passage of play, Dean Piemonte put the Cannons in front, curling a delightful effort into the top corner from 18 yards.

Oakleigh then added a second shortly after via the boot of Dusan Bosnjak, who managed to fire past Phil Petrovski despite being off balance and going to ground.

With all the wind knocked out of their sails, the Suns were passengers for the remainder of the first half as Oakleigh began to play some brilliant one-touch football in the final third.

Goal number three came on the stroke of halftime when Piemonte expertly steered a volley over the stranded Petrovski, leaving the Suns to rue their earlier missed opportunities.

Goran Zoric almost added a fourth immediately with an effort that would have comfortably won goal of the season.
The flying winger cut inside from the right flank and skipped past three defenders before playing a one-two with Korcari and striking a venomous volley that rattled the crossbar.

Daniel Chaabani replaced Paraskevas at the interval and the Suns again started brightly.

The sub went close from outside the area, following Cody Sellwood's effort.

Oakleigh again clinically took its chances as the ever-dangerous Zoric raced through the middle and toe-poked a thoroughly deserved goal on 54 minutes.

Miron Bleiberg then decided to tactically experiment, taking off Zoric and Veton Korcari for Nate Foster and Ari Ritz, allowing the Suns - in particular Vanega - to dominate.

Signed just this week, the number 10 was the architect for every attack in the second half, and worked well alongside Chaabani.

On 70 minutes he fired home a thunderous consolation from the edge of the box to cap off an outstanding debut.

Craig Carley had a frustrating night in search of his tenth goal of the season.

The man responsible for Cobram Victory's famous Dockerty Cup run two years ago looked to have closed the margin to 4-2,  but Honos reacted superbly to tip his bullet header over the bar.

Oakleigh boss Miron Bleiberg paid compliments to the regional visitors.
"What was the score for them against South Melbourne? 1-1. There you have it. They definitely are not the worst team we have played this season,” Bleiberg said.

"Their number 10 from Green Gully (Vanega) is a very good player and makes them a better team with the number eight (Chaabani).

We could have gone for more goals but I changed things around with a different formation because that (4-0) was the right time to try it, rather than 1-1 or 2-1."

The Suns were unavailable for comment.
