Dandy City claim third

By Damir Kulas

Dandenong City have surged into third place on the NPL1 Eastern Conference standings after a gallant 2-0 away victory over Kingston City on Monday night.

A first-half stoppage time goal from Chris Antoniadis and an Ashley Cattermole strike fifteen minutes from time sealed the three points for Aaron Healey’s men who made it four wins from their last games.

A cagey opening to the contest saw no clear-cut opportunities in the opening quarter of the hour with Kingston’s Sean McIlroy having a goal correctly ruled out for offside.

The visitors had their first strike on goal soon after when Andy Jerez’s free kick from an acute angle forced Kingston goalkeeper Douglas Lindberg to parry the ball out of danger.

Ashley Cattermole then almost opened the scoring for the away side when he broke free from City defence but saw his shot go just off target to the relief of a stranded Lindberg.

The scoring would opened with the last kick of the half as a Dandenong corner was momentarily cleared into the path of Antoniadis who latched onto the opportunity and buried the home ball for the lead.

Cattermole almost grabbed a second just after the break when he met a corner with a glancing header which flashed across goal and off target.

The home side were left frustrated for the second time on the night as substitute Stelios Konstantinidis saw his goal ruled out for offside.

The visitors would double their lead when a defensive mistake from Kingston was punished as Antoniadis cut the ball back to Cattermole to finish home and grab his seventeenth of the campaign.

Nick Tolios side’s had one more chance before the completion of the ninety as Deniz Sabanovski’s shot from outside the box was forced wide by a scrambling Damir Salcin.

McIlroy’s cutback from that shot fell into the path of Gino Defeo who was denied by some heroic defending from City stalwart and Captain John Carroll as Dandenong City collected all three points against a rather lacklustre Kingston outfit.
