Nuna leaves Shep empty handed after GVS' 6-2 win

By MATTHEW McNAMARA

Four goals from Goulburn Valley Suns' striker Craig Carley and a brace from Sean Ellis were enough to see off a spirited Nunawading City outfit at McEwan Reserve on Saturday evening.

Carley got things started for the home side with a first half hat-trick, before Anthony Giannopolous pulled one back for the visitors before half time.

Sean Ellis got involved after the break scoring a double, whilst Carley scored again for the hosts and John-Luc Silvestri added to the visitors tally.

But Carley was the star of the show, and began the scoring rout with only six minutes played when he rounded Keegan Coulter before slotting into an empty net.

He had his second some 10 minutes later when a mistake from Peter Evangelakos saw Carley once again slot the ball into an unguarded goal.

Carley was running rampant up front for the hosts, and rounded off his hat trick after being played in behind and once again rounding Coulter and slotting home.

The visitors were handed a lifeline before the break when Anthony Giannopoulos was fouled in the area by the Suns' Nikolaos Kalafatis.

Giannopoulos dusted himself off to take the penalty but it was well saved by Philip Petrovski, however he could only parry the ball and Giannopoulos smashed home the rebound.

Any chance of a comeback form the visitors was dashed immediately after the restart when Sean Ellis got on the end of an Adam Scott set piece and extended the home sides lead again.

The travelling Nunawading City side did look to get back into the game, with Stefan Papageorgiou marshaling the midfield and John-Luc Silverstri looking dangerous up front.

It was Silvestri who did reduce the deficit again, his long range effort sailing past Petrovski.

But Carley wasn’t to be outdone, adding his fourth of the night when a delightful cross from Vani Shamoon was headed home by the Englishman.

The Suns sealed the 6-2 scoreline late in injury time when Ellis scored with the final kick of the game.
