Bentleigh boys' balancing act

By Sean Ellicott (@seanellicott)

Tuesday's night Westfield FFA Cup semi-final isn't the only test confronting some of Bentleigh Greens' youngest players.

Tens of thousands of Australian students are currently submerged in endless piles of books, absorbed by late night study sessions in preparation for the penultimate end of year exams.

And the same goes for young Greens duo Nick Teichmann and Patrick Avice, as the pair juggle life between football and exams.

You won't here these two complaining about the heavy workload however, still counting their lucky stars following Bentleigh's awe-inspiring Westfield FFA Cup run.

"[We've been training] three to four days a week with these [FFA Cup] games so it's been pretty full on," Teichmann, a 19-year-old law student at Victoria University said.

"Ive got one more exam to go, had a couple of exams last week and the week before so we are at the business end of it."

The winger made his breakthrough into the senior team midway through PS4 National Premier Leagues 2014 campaign, attracting attention from Hyundai A-League side Melbourne City following a stellar 2014.

"It's been a surreal experience and something I'll remember for many years, even just being a small part of it," he said commenting on Bentleigh's dream cup run.

Studying though has taken a back seat for the first-year university student, with football all but consuming his life.

"I've been studying at home when I get a spare chance, but this [FFA Cup] is definitely priority - don't let the uni hear that (laughs)."

Teammate and Year 12 student Avice also finds himself in a similar situation.

The Mazenod College graduate has currently completed all but one of his exams among the hype surrounding the FFA Cup.

"One exam left and I've had five. It was crazy," Avice said about managing his studies alongside a strict training schedule.

"It's pretty tough balancing soccer with Year 12 studies and exams but I think I've managed to do pretty well and find a nice balance so that was good."

Having completed his English exam some eight hours earlier, the 18-year-old's defining moment came a fortnight ago as he provided the assist for Jamie De Abreu's 103rd-minute winner against Adelaide City in the quarter-finals.

There was no sticking around though for post-match celebrations.

The midfielder required an early night ahead of yet another exam the following morning.

"The day of our match against Adelaide I had the English exam. I had the exam in the morning, had the game at night, then the next morning I had another exam - psychology at 9am," he said.

"I had to leave straight after the game to make sure I got a good night sleep, even though I didn't, I had so much adrenaline pumping through…it was crazy."

Obviously, toppling the current A-League leaders provides the biggest test yet for the young duo.

Despite the bookies backing Perth Glory as the strong favourites, both Teichmann and Avice are confident their side will prevail on the night.

"I think we will get up to be honest," Teichmann said.

Avice added, "The belief in the squad is really high, feeling really good, and the team is definitely feeling good".
