Principato strike sinks Pascoe Vale

By Matt McNamara

Avondale FC has defeated a wasteful Pascoe Vale 1-0 on a cold Wednesday evening at CB Smith Reserve.

A Jason Principato strike against his old club just after the hour mark was enough to separate the teams in an otherwise dull midweel affair.

The first real chance of the game fell to the home side when Tom Black’s whipped free kick landed on the head of Carl Recchia, but his header was well saved by Siddle.

A truly uninspiring first half was called to a halt moments after Davey Van’t Schip could have given Pascoe Vale the lead, but he skied his effort well over the bar.

Pascoe Vale will be ruing a host of missed opportunities throughout the second period.

Black was the first to have his effort denied, as his strike sailed just over the bar with almost an hour played.

Joseph Youseff began to get himself into the game, creating a glorious chance for Mark Pistaninzi but the strike from the midfielder sailed agonizingly wide.

Avondale took the lead with its first real attempt at goal in the 64th minute when Julien Cannizzaro linked well with Burakhan Koca, before whipping in a delightful ball to Principato, who gave smashed home past Alexander Pavlidis.

Jonathon Munoz should have extended Avondale’s lead moments later when Principato turned supplier, but he dragged his strike wide of the upright.

As the game drew to a close, Siddall would ensure Avondale’s points were safe, when he expertly saved Michael Ferrante’s low free kick.

The result sees Avondale jump up to ninth spot, and four points clear of the relegation zone after almost a third of the season.
