Cannons fire against wasteful Hume

By Matthew McNamara

Oakleigh has extended its unbeaten with a 2-0 away victory over a luckless Hume City outfit on Sunday.

Dusan Bosnjak and Nate Foster both slotted home after first-half counter attacks paid off for the Cannons.

It could have been a totally different story however, as home side Hume City failed to convert numerous chances in what is becoming a recurrent theme this season.
But ultimately it was a disciplined and determined Oakleigh Cannons - brimming with confidence after a wonderful start to the season – which prevailed to sit in outright second on the table.

Content to sit back and hit Hume on the counter, it was the pace of Canadian striker Foster which created the first goal.

His powerful burst down the right-hand side was rewarded when his low cut-back was slipped home by Dusan Bosnjak - who only recently was awarded the inaugural Winning Edge Presentations NPL Player of the Month award.

The lead was doubled just before the halftime break as Foster utilised his pace on the left wing before easily drifting inside Isyan Erdogan and nestling his drive into the bottom corner to leave Chris Oldfield with no chance in the Hume goal.

Hume coach Louie Acevski must have let rip at halftime as his team came out firing in the second half.

Nick Marinos, who had only moments earlier replaced Joseph Franjic as Hume looked to surge forward, slotted home after Nick Hegarty and Richie Cardozo had combined brilliantly in the area, but the assistant referee had already flagged for offside.

Oakleigh should have wrapped up the game late on when Evan Christodoulou was played in but his game effort was held by Oldfield.

Oakleigh coach Miron Bleiberg was happy with the result.

"Today we played like Chelsea. Hume are not a bottom-half team, they are a top-half team so I am happy with the win,” Bleiberg said.

Hume City coach Louie Acevski was disappointed.

"Again we create chances but can't convert. It's becoming the story of our season so far. But I can assure you we are going to rectify it going forward,” Acevski said.

“Credit to Oakleigh, they worked hard and take home the three points."
