Sami Nour’s deflected strike in the 37th minute proved to be the difference between the two sides on a night where one of the Lions’ favourite sons in Mark Bresciano was in attendance to see the club collect their first points in the Victorian top flight since 2006.

An even opening to the contest saw both sides struggle to create any clear-cut goal scoring opportunities in a fast-paced first fifteen minutes before Cannons winger Goran Zoric tested Grffin McMaster at his near post with the shot-stopper producing a fine save down low.

A slick move from the visitors then saw Zoric slip in Dimitri Hatzimouratis’ whose close range shot was well saved by McMaster who reacted well to prevent an opener.

The Lions scored when Sami Nour’s exquisite turn on Aron Wilford seeing him cut inside into the box before seeing his goal-bound shot deflect off John Black and past a wrong-footed John Honos in Cannons goal.

Some neat play from Bulleen substitutes Shayan Alinejad and Dean Lorenzi saw Nour slipped through on goal by the latter, only for Honos to come to Oakleigh’s rescue with a quick-reaction save.

A spill from McMaster off Zoric free-kick ensued in a frantic goal-mouth scramble where Oakleigh substitute Ross Frame seeing his effort blocked away from goal,

The Welshman had another chance to find an equaliser only for his volley from close-range to go off target as the visitors pushed hard for an equaliser to little avail as Bulleen hanged on for a memorable three points to kick-start their home fixtures for the campaign while the Cannons have now gone 180 minutes without a goal.

With both sides having assembled strong outfits for the upcoming season, it was Avondale who took control of the match early, dominating in possession and creating a number of key chances on goal.

New signing Abraham Yango was a constant threat up front for the hosts with his pace and trickery initially causing problems for the experienced Hume central defensive pair of Shane Rexhepi and Ramazan Tavsancioglu.

Former Brisbane Roar midfielder Massimo Murdocca was dominant in midfield, pulling the strings as the likes of Nick Hegarty and Joe Franjic struggled to get themselves into the game.

It was the visiting side who opened the scoring though as Theo Markelis was given far too much space on the edge of the area before releasing a dipping shot which squirmed under the arms of Chris May and into the corner to make it 1-0.

The second half started much like the first ended though as Avondale continued to resign Hume to sitting back and countering and they finally got their equaliser through defender Jamie Cumming, and wasn’t it brilliant.

With a corner whipped in from the right, Cumming struck a volley over his own head and into the top corner from near the penalty spot to equalise for Avondale to the disbelief of the Hume players.

That joy was soon cut out though as former Adelaide Blue Eagles striker Kym Harris made an instant impact off the bench, turning and firing a rocket into the top corner to ensure Hume went home with three points despite being second best for the majority of the night.

A spectacular opener from Veton Korcari, a second-half brace from Amir Osmancevic and a late own goal from Mate Eterovic saw the visitors collect their second 4-0 victory in a week to claim the inaugural Jim Memeti Cup.

The game began at a frantic pace with Osmancevic and Eterovic exchanging chances at both ends before a pin-point cross from the left by the former was met perfectly by Korcari who blasted the ball into the net via a powerful volley.

The home side looked for an immediate response but a cleared free-kick set up an exhilarating Thunder counter attack which saw Osmancevic brought down by Andy Jerez just outside the box with the referee giving the left-back his marching orders for the last-man challenge.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Aaron Healey’s men pressed on with Eterovic having a free-kick from long-range tipped over the bar by Fraser Maclaren.

Daniel Bennett squared the ball to the back post for an unmarked Osmancevic to tap home the second.

The striker then had his second when he pounced onto a defensive mistake from Chris Sanita to finish expertly past Salcin before unselfishly teeing up Korcari only for Salcin to make a superb save to deny the Thunder stalwart.

Further chances went begging for the dominant visitors who were taking full advantage of their superior numbers and made it four soon after when Osmancevic’s corner was converted into the back of his own net by the unfortunate Eterovic to seal a comprehensive 4-0 victory.

With both sides scoring three and four goals respectively in Round 1, the contest promised to be an entertaining one with both Ranges and City fielding close to full strength sides.

Both sides started off well, moving the ball quickly going forward and creating chances at will, it was City who got the go ahead goal though through some good work down the left with the ball eventually being fed into the area towards the energetic Stefan Zinni who was brought down in the area resulting in a spot kick for the visitors.

Former Melbourne Victory and Hume City man Christopher Cristaldo stepped up but was denied initially by the legs of Luke Gallo before calmly controlling and slotting home the rebound to make it 1-0 Melbourne City.

That sparked Ranges into life as they begun to dominate in possession, pressing City’s inexperienced backline with Attila Ofli causing serious problems with his pace in behind.

That dominance didn’t convert into chances on goal though with City keeper Yaren Sozer relatively untested in the opening half.

Ranges came out firing early in the second and came close to equalising on a number of occasions before a moment of madness from centre half Tobias Haegele resulted in a straight red card for the Ranges centre back after lashing out at Zinni.

It was Zinni who then could’ve had the last laugh with two golden chances to seal the match but both times was foiled by Gallo who stood tall to keep his side in the game.

And despite being down to ten men it was Ranges who scored a late equaliser through veteran Naum Sekulovski who smashed home following a scramble in the box to give Ranges a vital point with the match finishing at 1-1.

The hosts opened the scoring in the first half through a Michael Trigger free kick before Pat Karras smashed home a 30 yard screamer to double their advantage.

Moreland came out firing early in the second half though and following a number of chances to equalise it was Apai Ukuno who finally found a way through with a back post tap in to make it 2-1.

They then levelled the game with just 11 minutes to play as Ukuno popped up to slide home following a goalmouth scramble to make it 2-2 with Moreland looking likely to win the game.

Those hopes were dashed in stoppage time though as David King found himself unmarked inside the six yard box from a corner to head home a dramatic winner.
