Turer gives Brunswick City rare win

By David Manuca

Bottom-placed Brunswick City picked up just their fifth win of the season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sunshine George Cross on Saturday afternoon.

It was Sunshine who controlled the game and created the majority of the chances but Ahmet Turer’s strike on the stroke of half-time was enough to seal the three points for the away side.

The first half never reached any great heights, however Sunshine should have taken the lead on just 12 minutes.

Some great work from George Cross striker AyodejiOmoboye down the right lead to him crossing to the back-post for an un-marked MuhamadChawk, but the winger spurned a glorious opportunity.

The next chance of the game came on 40 minutes but this time Chawk’s shot from just outside the box grazed the top of the crossbar.

Brunswick failed to create anything up-front but somehow managed to take the lead heading into half-time when Turer slotted past Sunshine goalkeeper Robert Santilli.

Sunshine started the better of the two sides in the second-half as they pushed for an equaliser but Omoboye blasted their first sight on goal way over the bar.

Brunswick went down the other end immediately and came very close to doubling their lead, but Turer’s shot was deflected out for a corner.

The home side hit the crossbar again, this time from a corner, but Martin Mason’s diving header bounced back into play and into the hands of Brunswick goalkeeper Jake Crea.

Crea made a mistake minutes later, handling the ball outside the area, but Chawk couldn’t make him pay from the resulting free-kick and the goalkeeper had his blushes spared.

Sunshine continued to push late in the game for an equaliser but the Brunswick defence stood strong to keep just their third clean sheet of the season.
