Thomas sends Simsek out a winner

BY DAVID MANUCA

Two goals from Corey Thomas gave Moreland City an important three points away to Sunshine George Cross in NPL1 West on Saturday afternoon.

Thomas opened the scoring after 13 minutes before Damien Rastocic equalised for the home side, but an 84th minute strike from Thomas sealed a vital victory for Moreland.

The first chance of the game fell to Sunshine in the opening minutes when Martin Mason got his head on a corner but could only direct it into the hands of Moreland goalkeeper Brandon Galgano.

It proved costly when Moreland put their first chance on goal into the back of the net. A free-kick was deflected off the wall and Thomas pounced to drive a low shot past Georgies goalkeeper Robert Santilli.

An early injury to Osman Kose saw him forced off and things got worse for Moreland shortly afterwards when Sunshine found an equaliser.

Ayodeji Omoboye’s great run saw him tee up Rastocic, and the midfielder’s shot bounced in-front of Galgano and over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Kam Simsek, who was playing his last game for the club, almost put Moreland back ahead after the half-time break but he could only scrape a shot just wide of the goal.

The home fans erupted with twenty minutes left to play when Omoboye was seemingly brought down in the box, but the referee waved play on and no penalty was awarded.

As the game approached the final stages Sunshine were clearly on top, but a counter-attack with six minutes left to play saw them punished.

Mo Kurucu played a low cross from the left to Simsek, who calmly controlled and set-up Thomas to place it past Santilli and seal the win.
