A clinical Green Gully outfit has defeated a depleted Port Melbourne side by two goals to nil on a wet and cold JL Murphy Reserve on Friday night.

With both sides opening the game with intent, it was Gully who took the advantage just before half time courtesy of a fantastic drive from star mid-season signing Liam Boland before Matthew Breeze bundled home early in the second to Give Gully the win.

Having experienced an end of season resurgence under the guidance of former Melbourne Victory defender Rodrigo Vargas and former player Stephen Downes, Green Gully were looking dangerous in the early exchanges with Liam Scott firing the first warning shot just wide of the right post.

Kamal Ibrahim then had a half chance for Port, receiving a pass from Connor Reddan before turning and striking his effort over the cross bar from just outside the area.

Adrian Zahra was next to trouble for the hosts, with his low drive skidding off the wet surface but again didn’t trouble Rani Dowisha in the Green Gully goal.

Green Gully did eventually take the lead though through Boland in the 35th minute.

The former Oakleigh striker beat a man before driving a low left footed effort into the far bottom corner past Michael Stark to make it 1-0 for the visitors.

They should’ve doubled their lead a few minutes later as Simon Tolli had the ball fall to his feet just a few yards out from goal but Stark did well to make himself big, blocking the attempt.

After the break Gully seemed to really take control of the contest and as a result created chance after chance on goal in the hopes of adding to their lead.

It was Boland again who was causing problems, getting his head up and electing to shoot from 25 yards with real power but could only hit his effort straight at the goalkeeper who held well.

Just moments later Gully were two up though following a great piece of attacking play.

With the Gully midfield completely on top early in the second half, they won the ball again before moving it out to the right where the winger had time to measure an inch perfect cross, finding Breeze at the back post who bundled home to make it 2-0.

With the hosts now in desperate need of a goal to get themselves back into the contest some good work out on the right from Ryan Opperman saw a low cross delivered into the

middle towards Nick Krousoratis who got ahead of his man but saw his effort well blocked by Dowisha.

Gully looked to make the points safe 20 minutes from time as Scott took aim with another long range effort which was well saved by Stark initially before Breeze fired wide on the follow up.

And with Port unable to muster a comeback in the remaining 15 minutes it was Green Gully who secured a deserved result winning 2-0.
