Suns take down Victory in Shepparton

Two goals in the space of three first-half minutes were enough for the Goulburn Valley Suns to see off a spirited Melbourne Victory team on Saturday evening.

The hosts took the lead just after the half hour mark when fullback Greg Nash ventured forward, his strike sailing into the top corner before Shaun Kane extended the lead moments later.

Victory hit back just after the break when John Maclean tapped home and gave the game a much needed lift.

The Suns let their intentions be known early when Victory shot stopper Wyatt Chant was clattered in only the third minute by Suns enforcer Adrian Corbo.

The young Victory side responded quickly, George Howard breaking free before being denied by Monty Alghazaly.

Chant was in the thick of things again moments later when ex-Perth Glory fullback Naum Sekulovski hit a stinging drive.

The shot was destined for the top corner until Chant made a tremendous save.

But the Suns would find a way past Chant; Nash sending his curling effort into the corner to give the hosts the lead.

That advantage was doubled moments later when Kane reacted first in the area after a goalmouth scramble and drove his shot home to have the hosts two goals to the good at the half time break.

The visitors began well from the kick off, substitute Pierce Waring guilty of missing a glorious opportunity.

But on 51 minutes Waring squared a delightful ball to Maclean who tapped home past the hapless Alghazaly.

The travelling Victory side was continually frustrated by the deep defensive line of the Suns, with Darren Davies' side struggling to penetrate the Suns' defensive block.

Lucas Derrick was introduced out wide and his pace created numerous chances, however Victory's normally efficient front three were misfiring.

Carley had a chance to seal the game for the Suns when he looked to have caught Chant off his line, but the teenage keeper did enough to send the ball over the bar.

Despite Victory's second half dominance, it couldn't find an equaliser as the Suns held on to record a 2-1 win.
