Saints close in on top two with win

By Matthew McNamara

St Albans has seen off a spirited Kingston City outfit at Churchill Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Tedros Yabio and Nicholas Scerri were enough for the Saints to continue their recent rich vein form and see off the visitors 2-0.

The game saw two very contrasting styles of play in action, St Albans looking to regularly move the ball forward early in transition while Kingston City continued its patient build up throughout the opening period.

Trent Waterson was creating issues with his expert delivery from wide areas, his cross into Yabio saw the youngster's header go just wide.

Kingston had chances of its own however, star striker Sean McIlroy unleashed a stinging strike which sailed just over Stuart Webster's goal.

Again it was the Waterson and Yabio connection that combined, this time a low cross from Waterson found Yabio at the front post who made no mistake to slip the ball past Douglas Lindberg to give the hosts a 1-0 lead just before the break.

The visitors should have levelled in first half stoppage time when McIlroy nodded a ball across the face of goal to George Stavridis, however the right back's header somehow went over the bar despite being unmarked from only three yards out.

Kingston came out with real purpose in the second period, controlling large periods of the game as the Saints looked to sit deep and compact to protect their 1-0 advantage.

Again, McIlroy was in the thick of things for the home side and will be ruing his missed chance just after the break, when he broke free and lobbed the ball over Webster but his strike landed just over the crossbar and went out for a goal kick.

The visitors almost had an equaliser in the 65th minute when McIlroy rose high at the back post but Webster turned back the clock with a trademark diving save to deny his fellow Scotsman.

After absorbing a huge amount of Kingston pressure in the second period, the home side sealed the points in stoppage time when Scerri got onto the end of a long clearance from Webster before easily slotting past Lindberg to give his side a 2-0 victory.
