Super second half leads Suns to victory over Brunswick

Goulburn Valley Suns has moved to second position on the NPL 1 East table after a second half onslaught of Brunswick City at McEwan Reserve on Sunday evening.

Vani Shamoon opened the scoring in the 69 th minute with a neat finish before imports Sean Ellis and Jamie England secured the Suns’ third win on the trot.

In truth the home side should have had the game wrapped up in the first half, with Brunswick struggling to gain any real possession.

The Suns had the ball in the net after only 11 minutes but the assistant referee’s flag saw Ellis’ goal denied.

Brunswick was allowing the Suns to have possession, intent on hitting on the counter. Dimi Vithuolkas went nearest for the visitors in the opening period when his strike was cleared away on the line.

The hosts had numerous chances to take the lead in the dying stages of the opening period, with Ellis and Craig Carley both guilty of missing,

Brunswick looked somewhat rejuvenated in eth second period, and should have taken the lead when Matthew Murphy broke free but his lob was deflected onto the crossbar Suns’ keeper Philip Petrovski.

Despite dominating possession the home side couldn’t find the back of the net with youngster Shamoon guilty of spurning a glorious chance.

But Shamoon made amends moments later, chesting down a ball from Ellis before neatly tucking the ball past Alex Hards. Brunswick was furious, adamant that Shamoon was offside but the 19-year-old wheeled away in celebration after scoring against his old club.

The Suns would round out the victory through Ellis and England.

Leading scorer Ellis unleashed yet another contender for goal of the season, his left footed strike easily sailing past Hards.

England compelted the rout in stoppage time when he neatly combined with Carley before slotting home.
